It's gotta be heartening to see that reel come back to you worn out from someone putting it to use as designed. Nice job to both of you
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

I haven't got it yet, but I am thinking it's the drag washers in the insert kit.

I dunno what else it could be...

Shark Hunter

He told me he took it to a shop and they removed one of the drag washers?
I'd say they did something else that caused the drag to give out.
Still don't have it yet.

OK,
Looking at this reel, It has been fished very hard.

Black grease oozing out. It was blue when it left here.

Whatever Clown reel repair that worked on this had no idea what they were doing.
If you couldn't replace the slotted washers, just replace the gear to a standard stack, instead of doing that, they put regular 9/0 washers in a slotted gear and not even close to being stacked correctly.
Every screw on the handle side was loose. Even the handle.
He said they told him they replaced one drag washer? They only left one correct drag washer.

She is like new again. Gears were still tight and new slotted washers.
I am only going to charge shipping. This is the last set of washers I have.
This reel is very unique cause it has a one piece spool and bushings.
It was his Grandfathers and I am honored to make it new again for him.
A very wise man told me to pay it forward.

Great save on that 70yo 9/0 Daron, you're the man!! Fully tanked with the new drag stack, handle and arm, and a Cortez half frame !!!

Otto Henze would be proud of your passion for the old Penns.

Now it's ready for another 70 years of fishing

The "clown" prolly wasn't at all familiar with the slotted gear/washer thing. You're right though, why wouldn't he not just replace the gear and keep the eared/keyed washer system? Was the slotted unit an insert in the gear?

I thought we decided that those insert drag washers were not a good idea because the carbon fiber nubs are not strong enough?  Anyway, that was my take-away from the discussions.

I thought that too Steve.
These were from Alan Chui. aka Black Pearl. Now known as Pro Challenger.
The Insert that Adam Made.(Motive Fabrication) were different and not as well made as this system.
The washers fit very tight and it took him 9 years to wear them out.
I am very surprised the gears are still like new.
Sal was instrumental in having these made and I was always folowing his lead.
This thing puts out some Phenomenal drag.
