Denatured alcohol, saturate thoroughly with a Terry cloth towel, and wipe away.

Funnily enough...BenGay heat rub will take it off skin.
Might work on metal as well?

Try a garage type cream hand cleaner. It works great for stuff like that along with other stubborn stuff and does not affect the finish.

Rubbing alcohol took it right off. Not discoloration or marks. Thanks guys.

plastic safe contact cleaner also works. takes marker off auto paint without damaging the paint so it should be great for a spool
