The 501 is a nice little reel. I have a few, one always comes for a ride on the boat.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Why not try one of Alan's souped up Charter Special options (TR1000 or TR2000)? One piece frame, Carbontex lever drag, Pete Kolekar spinner handle. It takes less than an hour to do the whole conversion.
