The Great Maudu

I'm the same way. They are smooth, powerful reels and I love the sound when cranked. Did you look at the drag and see how it works?

Shark Hunter

No,
I didn't disassemble the guts.
They looked very good and greased. A Templar Guru has had this baby apart.
I was a little intimidated by them after seeing this.

I have had such a perfect weekend. I don't want to ruin it by leaving an 80 year old reel in pieces on the table. ;)

If you think that is intimidating wait until you see the Meisselbach Surf Reel I have. It has so many features that when it came on the market in 1914 they sold for twice what a Vom Hofe sold for. I think we should tune these Templars up, strap them on a bamboo game rod and see what it's like to catch a shark. Target something in the 4' - 6' range. Would make a great fishing story.

Maudu and Daron,

You won the lottery with those rare rings ! LUCKY !

Seeing as you brought up the Pflueger Templar you might like to read this bit of history.

That's a good looking reel for sure.

Nice article too except for the bit about the leather thumb stall being used to level the line and that the /0 or aught designation indicating it is for saltwater use.  The 1/0 just means it is larger than size #1.

Are there any clues to dating a Templar?  I bought a 4/0 size but haven't been into it yet and know nothing about them.

Thank you for the heads-up about Templars being tricky to assemble Daron.  I'll try to do it with a clear head and follow the tutorial.

Hey Daron, when you mentioned someone had gone through the reel I gave you it jogged my memory. Here's the link. http://reeltalk.orcaonline.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19385

Ahh,
So you are the Guru. ;D

I remember this post, but didn't recognize the history.  Alot of these older reels tend to get passed around between various members over the years.  It's good to remember that we are just temporary stewards of the history.
