G'day Don, I fish mostly freshwater for zander and catfish here in Germany and sometimes when i can find time the atlantic coast of Portugal. I have the champion series 4001 and 5001 set up for fishing and also some of them in the fridge together with the complete N series. Im not a collector I just need to have them close, haha. Currently I got hold of two quick super 270 in really bad shape and started to clean, assort the usable parts and prepare some of them for powdercoating. I like to make one functional and ready for saltwater use from those, maybe modified for bailless and a better handle grip. Need to gather some pictures and will start a thread about this project soon.

Btw, thank you all for welcoming me, feels like a great place! :)

Thanks for your quick reply, we would love to see some pictures of your powder coating, Foakes, Fred Oakes, has the biggest supply of Dam Quick parts on this forum, He is also a very helpful man, like most members on this forum, although there is possibly plenty in Germany, cheers Don.

I'm brand new to the forum and hope to learn and join in lots of Alan's long range trips in near future.  Only done one long range trip so far and that was an 11 day on Royal Star.  Love any type of salt water fishing.
Happy holidays to everyone!!

Hey everyone,

I just got into the fixing side of things when it comes to my reels and sure am happy and relieved to find a forum like this. So much great info, a sincere thanks to all who contribute and make this happen. Hopefully some of my experience breaking things can help others not let it get that far.

Plus I think one of these ancient Penn Long Beach's I've had sitting around for years is probably a cool one, the bigger style from the late 30's with a waffle clicker and torpedo handle.  Gonna see if there's a good thread for that.

Cheers from Area 10, Puget Sound, Seattle

Welcome aboard Trav.

Although the Long Beach is a great starter reel to learn repairing Penn and others, be careful not to ruin the vintage condition of yours. It would be better to buy a more recent cheap beater reel to practice on first. I made the tragic mistake of over-soaking in vinegar a vintage reel with German silver plating and the result was copper colored metal instead of the original beautiful silver.
