I did this reel this morning before Christmas dinner. I made a couple of modifications and man it's LOUD.

If you think the Penn 850SS and 12 tooth ratchet was loud you should hear this one.

What I did was use the drag plate from a 30 sized reel that has many more teeth for the dogs with a new HT-100 drag washer. The last one I had.

When reeling it sounds like the alarm clicker is on!!

There is less than 1/4" of backplay in the handle.

The reel is in mint condition too!

Nice job on that reel!

I have done the same modification on these older penns.  A great upgrade well worthy of spending the money on.

I like the use of your clamp to aid with that old style cooling shield.  They can be a bit of a hassel to install by hand.

BTW...

Merry Christmas!

I use that clamp on all international spools. It makes it very easy.

reel man

It could be the noise is coming from the right side of the spool.  I use a heavy grease to cote the dimples to reduce a lot of the noise when winding on the reel.

I was being a bit sarcastic in my post. I knew it would be loud  ;D

The clamp is not on the shield itself. Its on both ends of the pinion gear. This way you can rotate the ring to pop it back in or replace the screws.
