You know Nelz I can't remember, but I must have.  There is no way I will stick with the originals, even though it seems pretty smooth.

I am going to have a long weekend since I'm looking at taking Friday off, so I may just tear it apart again and see what I did.

Post up some pics of your 50HSD.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

Breaking news  ;D

Jigmaster 500 drag disks fit perfectly in these reels, except for the thickness. However... I am thinking that the CF disks from Bryan's Jigmaster 5+1 stack should be perfect since they're thinner.

In the meantime, I was able to fit three standard Jigmaster disks plus one original disk into the stack and it works great! Had to leave out one of the metal washers (the one with the tabs).

I will get around to buying some Jigmaster 5+1 stack CF disks eventually, but for now the reel's sealed up and ready for action.

Oh, and here's the pic you requested:

Also, I am working on some other upgrades that will make this super reel into a super-duper one, lol. Looking to add ball bearings to both ends of the gear shaft. With that in mind, I bought a nifty new vernier caliper tool, and so far, these are the measurements I've come up with:

Key: 46
Part: No. B73-8001
Part Name: Bushing B
Size: 7 X 14 X ***3.3<->3.5
***see photo, not sure how to read this last measurement on the new caliper

Key: 58
Part: No. F86-0901
Part Name: Bushing C
Size: 11 X 17 X 2.75

Hopefully I'll find bearings in these sizes to replace the bushings.

That's great, I love to see them.

Mine is blown apart waiting on drags.  Now that you say it, I'm pretty sure I probably put Bryan's 5 stack in there. (The 40HSD).

But I'm really excited to report that my bud Wai followed up and scored the 40 from down his way.  I'll post pics of the family when I am working on the lot.

I've pretty much decided to go ahead and use them for salmon.

I'm trying to find an inexpensive 4x4 to tow my boat now.  I owe someone a fishing trip.

Here's the family.  I tore apart the 40HSD that Wai picked up and shipped to me.  (Thanks Mr. Jung).  I reinstalled the original drags after wiping a lot of oil off them. The drag seems plenty smooth enough for now.  I then put everything into a brand new frame I had on hand. Then I swapped out the crank /handle for a Tani. Its not the correct fit as far as the handle shaft but it's good enough for salmon.  Now just need line.

I wanted to see if any parts interchanged so I had a big pile of Daiwa reels torn apart. Not much worked. Stars, spools and sleeves were all different.  But while I had them apart I realized the 47H and 50H were awesome, just like I remember. With a SS sleeve from Cortez the 50H is a gun.
My opinion of the HSD's dropped a bit when I realized how small the sleeve is in comparison. Still, straight from the factory the HSD family beats Jigmasters easily.  A 40HSD is a Penn 99 sized reel with better stock drags, a solid frame and a stainless dog. Just remember to use the drags properly....

Now that I've seen the family complete, I can now go enjoy that lunch!

You earned it buddy!  That was the least I could do for all the running you had to do to make this happen.

I didn't know the 50H had that jumbo sleeve! Anyhow, the HSD's are the same size as many other reels in their class and work fine for me as is, I'm not winching big ones from the deep blue.

So I got to test my modified "4 stack" drag on a nice Bonita the other day and wow, it was smoooth as can be. And let me tell you, those Bonitas are my pick as pound for pound toughest fish around. Unfortunately, the outing also proved to be a disaster for casting with this reel, with many bird's nests and lack of control. So I had to do something because I love the reel otherwise...

So, I added a powerful little magnet taken from an old hard drive. It fit perfectly into a space in the reel, as seen in the photo. Cleaned the area well and used Super Glue gel, but I'll need to grease coat it after it dries because those magnets rust really bad. This fix should make casting a breeze.

Rancanfish

Nelz, where are you fishing?

I like the idea of the magnet, but I think I'm going to be trolling, so wouldn't be a problem for me.

I know I will never have a problem with the sleeve on the HSD's.  My mentor, Sal DiMercurio, would threaten to throw me out of the boat if I touched the drag after it was set.  My landing rate went way up.  ;D

I don't have the experience catching any giants where I felt I had to hammer my drags to slow them down.

Now that I think of it I should have had Wai tear the reel down to get his opinion. I think his middle name is Daiwa.

I was fishing off a pier in South Florida. Man I tell you, those Bonita can fight! They fight so hard in fact, that they don't survive well when released. I actually did tighten the drag a bit as I was fighting it because it was heading across all the lines. The HSD drag remained smooth as butter and turned that bad boy!

If only...until i've double-dogged all my 300H, 400H's, and 600H's, as well as add Tom's stainless steel gear sleeves, I will make no attempt to any sort of "Daiwa" title.

Netz, how far are you from Melbourne?

About 3 hours drive.

Maybe traveling to Melbourne for work, but 6 hours round trip is a bit much to go to try and get in a session of evening fishing and then be back at work the next morning.

nelz

Yeah, especially just to fish on a pier. I hear Sebastian Inlet is great, but have never gone because of the drive. That's pretty close to Melbourne I believe, you might want to check it out.
