You're getting your money's worth out of that reel.  It takes a lot of use to wear down the spool ends enough for the cast control knob to bottom out.

I like my older baitcasters.  I had spinning reels until I bought that 5500C at a hardware store in '82. I'm fondest of fishing with my casting reels from the 1980s.
