Hey Boys and Girls, I have a Penn 330gti that is about 15 years old. The drag I have never been happy with, very sticky and jerky from day one. Started using tld 20/25's and never looked back. Have not used this reel for years so I was going give it a service and maybe put it back into service. Last time I serviced it I went off off a old magazine article that said drag washers should be run dry. After. coming here I now know much better and have some cal's drag grease that I am certain will fix the drag. Thinking about using the reel for casting big bait's for shark in the surf.Would have to buy a rod for this application.Wondering if anyone has used these reels for this? Would use corrosion x in bearings instead of grease if it can be casted.Using 30#mono as line ATM.Cheers Scott

Maybe remove the levelwind guide. It probably won't hold up against a good sized shark.      Rudy

... and the worm to free it up for casting.

I wouldn't recommend a 330 even with the level wind removed for sharks, at least not if you expect to get any fish in the 100 pound range. Many people used to try to use 330s for Alaska halibut and far too many ended up with shredded gears. The plastic frame torques under heavy drag and causes the gears to misalign, etc. Remember the 330 came out before braid and was designed for relatively light mono...

The level wind I removed long ago.Would mainly be a spare and for when things are a bit slow and just want to mix it up.Scott

330 is an okay striper reel, but I wouldn't use it for something larger.
