In Alan Hawks review, there was one thing that I have not seen mentioned here. This is directly from the review..."They put a ball bearing for the spool to run on,except that the bearing is prevented from spinning by the spool shim"

The picture he showed confirms this configuration...he also showed considerable wear on the underside of spool from contact with the bearing.  I am very new here and to working on reels,,but this doesn't make sense..can anyone tell me if this is an issue with the Clash? It's hard to believe it's true. What's the deal?

Didn't you ask the same question under another heading (spinning reels)??  ???  :P You just have to be patient and wait for an answer. There is no one here 24 hours a day waiting for questions. You may get 100 people reading your message but if none of them has the answer you won't get an answer. When someone knows the answer they will answer you.

took a look at the schematics, but didn't see one.

The smaller models (4k and below) use a different arrangement where the spool adjust washers sit over the bearing. In the 5k and larger they are sized to be **just**larger than the bearing (part #39A Spool Adjust Washer) and have other small differences on how the spindle to spool mating is done.
