She was a brave vessel, Mr. Shark. Here is her story:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Fife_(DD-991)

Hi Shark Hunter, my brother was in charge of the front gun turret that you were leaning against. I believe he was a 1st Lt some time in 1983.
I was able to tour that boat when they stopped over here in Pearl Harbor.
When did you serve on it?

I was on That ship for 9 months in 1986.
It went into the shipyards towards the end of my tour to be the first Verticle Asroc Destroyer.

I know this is a pretty old thread, but have a question about the 180 that is somewhat related.

I'm pretty sure that to double dog the 180, OP had to grind/Dremel the side plate to accept the second dog.

By this theory, would it be possible to do this on order to convert to lefty? Obviously would need a sleeve and gears, but this is the one missing piece for a left handed 180 - a way to get the dog to work on a lefty sleeve.  I have a nice and clean 180 that would make an excellent candidate for this.... And would be a fantastic reel for stripers and CA halibut in SF Bay....

Two suggestions before you start dremeling. 1) Read a lot of double-dog conversion posts, especially Sal's. This will help you to figure out your spring type and configuration. 2) Get a beater side-plate to practice on. Go slow, it's easier to take a little more off, that to put a little back on.

-Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yes, definitely a little practice is in order. I've used the Dremel on a lot of different things, but not bakelite yet. I imagine older bakelite has a tendency to be brittle, which might be the trickiest part of cutting this.

In regards to dog placement, I can either hollow out the opposite side a little, or maybe reverse the dog where it currently sits. Might require a different shaped dog, or different spring. Will play with it a little and see what I come up with ...

Gfish

Suggest you mask-up while Dremel grinding, that dust can't be healthy.
