Funny.... 56 years here in Florida living minutes from the water and I've never heard or seen of "brown algae".   Red Tide.  The Dead Black Sea just west of Naples.  Brown water that makes the yankees cry and politicians waste money.  But never "brown algae".

I lived in South FL from 1965 to 2006 ( and should have never left ) . . .

I hadn't heard of "Brown Algae", either, until I saw those articles.

Looks like raw sewage dumping, combined with agricultural fertilizer "run-off" may be to blame.
