I have a SURFMASTER 200 that I had the same problem with a plastic spool. But the spare plastic spool was OK.
As you can see in this photo, the little posts that hold the side plate on are only about just less than 1mm long. (post at 3 o'clock in photo)
I have  99, 500,501 that have posts about 2mm long.
