Recently saw a video where the guy (after cleaning off all the spool corrosion) colored over every area of the spool that was corroded with a black sharpie. My heart hurt watching it. Is that a thing? Is it smart to do? Thoughts?!

I don't think it provides any type of protection.  But I cannot say for sure.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

I can only think the idea came from the habit of colouring hook points after they've been sharpened-a great idea to keep track of piles of hooks but as mentioned ZIP for protection.

I did that as a kid.  The black sharpie will have a purple sheen.  I doesn't last long at all and will rub off.

Probably makes the owner feel a bit better as it hides the marks for a few days.

I once hid some marks on a sticker on a rod in that way, before covering with epoxy.
The marker became yellow under the epoxy, so actually made it appear much worse!
