hi guys, i practice daytime swordfishing. I have seen that a few weeks ago Okuma has made a drill winder available to its customers. first of all I would like to pay a public compliment to this company ... great idea! good guys you are proving that you meet the needs of us customers. now we come to the reason for my post. on the okuma website it says that this accessory is suitable for the okuma makaira 50 - 50w and 80w models. I would like to know if it is also adaptable to the 30II version, because the handle of the 30II is the same as the 50II. could someone help me?Screenshot_20220915-094043_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20220915-094026_Chrome.jpg

Woah, that's cool. As far as I can tell the important components are the same between the 30 and larger reels so this should work just fine on a 30. The side question is whether a 30 is a suitable reel for Swordfish, unless you're only catching little ones.

Hi, I can understand your concerns. in reality it is all relative. let me explain better, daytime swordfishing is a type of fishing that offers a multitude of variations and styles. just think of the abysmal differences between the Floridian style and the Australian one. I remember an article in marlin magazine entitled light tackle for Swordfish. Rj Boyle described a lighter style using a talica 25II. I am convinced that the Makaira 30II sea has all the credentials due to its technical characteristics.

Does it work with a 2 speed?  Pictures show it on a single speed, might not work on a 30II
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Sorry but I don't understand what/how this device is used? :-[

I can't find anything about this.   Could someone provide a link please.

Thanks

That metal extension fits in a drill to wind the line in deep dropping

I expected something like that, does it take two people to operate, seems very awkward to do.   Then when your lure comes up fast with drill connected a tuna grabs it ;D

There is no single speed Makaira  ???

The bit with the 4 screws sits over the shifter.

Typically the rod used is a bent butt, and it's left in the rod holder other than when fighting a fish.

Or if you're from Florida, while fighting the fish. On an electric reel.

EDIT: I know I sound grumpy there but I just don't get the anglers who go out and winch in a sword using a Hooker reel on a bent butt in a rod holder then act like they've fought a great fight. When we deep drop for wreckfish using electrics, it's meat harvesting, that's all there is to it, nobody is pretending it's some great accomplishment.

It probably has something to do with Commercialisation of the tackle industry.

In 2001 I got on to a California fishing forum for the first time in my life.   That was the time when I was fishing 24/7 and I believed I knew everything about Yellowtail fishing.   I soon learnt that there are different ways of doing things and it was not for me or anyone else to believe we knew it all or to be critical.

I had many questions which till today remain unanswered because they may be sensitive to some.    Our fishing is radically different to what you guys do in CA or the states as a whole.   A simple example, the owner of that site once offered me a free 5 day trip on one of the top boats, but it did not appeal to me at all.  I thought about it hard because I would have liked to meet some of the people on the site and I had never been to the USA.    At the end the finance did not make it a worth while proposition, free trip or not it was not justifiable for me to spend that money (Flights, accommodation, travel, food, beer) on my own, just to meet a few guys.

Some fish are endangered and should rather be left alone.   All swordfish down here are tagged and released, but some die in the process. They are extremely rare, I have once seen one!  I tag quite a lot of fish and always thought it was a good thing to do in the interest of science, but these days I take flack for that.   Even some Marine Biologists now differ about the benefits of tagging.

Sorry, I am going off the deep end again :d

I think it would be used for checking bait and the like, would be awkward to fight a fish with. Could also be use for a kite
