So here comes another one to the bench.

Customer states: "AR only works intermittently".  Open it up and am greeted with this underwhelming AR arrangement.  I have seen better setups as the backup AR dogs in Curados! This is all there is on an alleged light game overhead reel >:(

He's right, it only works about two out of five times.  Spent a ridiculous amount time playing with the bend of the ears etc. trying to make it work.  After screaming yet another expletive laden opinion on Daiwa-san's ancestoral lineage, I took a deep breath, walked away for a few minutes and then returned to the scene of the crime.  I noticed that the mainshaft was ground particularly smooth just above the support bearing.  I also noticed that the sideplate recess had a half dozen bumps in the casting....hmmmmm.  ???    Grabbed the verniers: lo and behold, shaft is 12mm OD.  Checked the sideplate:  about 16-18mm.  I wonder????  Pulled an EWC1209 AR bearing out of the drawer and.....

Happy Daze!!!!
So the question has to be asked:  why the $%#* would you design a reel with space for an AR bearing and then only install the p###weak dog setup that they did??  >:(
I know you have become tightarses like all the other manufacturers Daiwa, but even though you are getting them made in Korea, you COULD spend an extra buck or so and do it properly!
I won't even start on the high gear pair that sound like a concrete mixer and can't be silenced......

Aaaaah, now I feel better
Hope this might help another poor technician! :d

cheers

The 2-speed reels don't get an instant anti-reverse because it affects the shifting. Same on Shimano Talicas, although they at least have double dogs.

As for the dog setup, the LD30 is pretty much a 30lb reel... not sure why they bothered doing a 2-speed really. The single dog is completely fine for running 10lb of drag at strike, in my humble opinion.

That's an interesting observation on the shifting that I must admit I didn't think through, but the existing setup is completely unreliable so anything is an improvement. I will advise the customer and let him use it for a while and see if he has any problems in the field.

As an aside, the dogs in these are unbelievably tricky to get right.

I would start by removing all grease in that area, especially around the dog post, and just lightly oil the pivot with something like TSI321. I would also remove all lubricant from the dog ears and the ratchet gear. They just seem to work better like that.

Tried dry and light oiling, maybe the ears have just lost all tension.  :(  Next step will be new parts, but the owner is going to try it out with the new AR brg and see how it performs first, shifting off load as the rod tip drops.  It will be interesting to see if it will work or not.
