I had a friend pick up a 309 at a garage sale. Being the nice guy I am, I offered to
take it apart and do basic maintenance. I like to do forensic work on reels
that take a beating to see what went wrong under the hood.
Everything looked okay, only minor corrosion and dry drags.
I removed the old brown oil or grease and got the guts all clean.
The problem is when I attempt to put the sleeve back on the bridge post.
it goes on about 1/2" and is pretty tight!  :o

Do I have a burr of the inside of the sleeve that I caused when punching out the pin?
I put a swab inside the main bear and don't feel any snags or resistance.

Thanks

Most likely, it does not take much.  I have a hardened tool I use to swage burs if I'm going to reuse a damaged gear sleeve.

Hi Gman --

Try a different known to be good gear sleeve -- even if not the right one -- as long as the gear sleeve post opening is the exact same.

If it spins freely -- you have determined it is the sleeve for sure.

If it also sticks at 1/2" -- then you may have a bent gear post on the bridge assembly -- or a burr someplace else, perhaps the post.

This is unlikely -- but possible.

Likely culprit is the softer brass gear sleeve.

I take an old drill bit of the exact diameter -- and either run it backwards against the cutting spiral -- enough to knock off or swage any issues inside.  Or just install it upside down in your drill -- run it for 3 - 5 minutes -- clean it up -- try it out -- should work.

Good luck & let us know how you fared.

Best,

I have some spare jigMaster sleeves that fit and spin just fine
on the bridge, but are fine threaded.  :-[
This was after I tried cleaning up the original sleeve and then can't get the pin
back in. In fact I bent it.
Would Orchard have any material i could use for a pin. Size 1/16"

Thanks

Gman, are you saying you need a coarse sleeve and pin?

I have both if you need it. 20 min. south of you in Dublin.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

Ran, it was good to talk with you the other night and thanks for the offer.
I did manage to get the reel back together. It's been taken apart
and back together about eight times now.
It spins and all is well until I lock down the star drag.
At this point nothing works.
For some reason the spacing sleeve gets pushed
down light to the drags and gets wedge very tight
to where the star drag is tight and you can't back it off.
This garage sale wonder is starting to chap my hide.
I told my buddy I'd service it for him, It it were mine
it would be parts.

It sounds like you need a longer spacer sleeve.

I pulled apart an old 209 and I was wrong about the parts a bit.  I thought the sleeve and gear were like a surfmaster but they are not.

Little toy drags, small but beefy looking gear.

It has dry CF drags so I'll grease them and put it back away.

I do have the different size spacers if you aren't done messing with it.

After not touching a reel for a few years.... I just made a memo to self.
tension washer goes UNDER spacing sleeve.
I feel like I got some good practice to start working on my YT specials now. -g
