Ice Fishin Rod Questions

The ice on the lakes that I can access did not freeze enough to fish on this year but I still want to try it and  I have several months to build a few rods.  I have some questions before I gather parts.

Lots of choices for blanks, what would be best for smallish yellow perch, crappie and trout?  Solid, hollow, graphite or glass?  Length?

Would guide inserts fail from to removing ice from them?  What should I consider when choosing guides?
