I have a friend going to Germany soon & asked him to BOLO for DAM Quick reels. I am researching the duty requirements to bring a few reels back & if it is worth the cost?

Good Dam Quick reels are not cheaper in Germany or Europe

foakes

They are typically a little more expensive.

The largest market for DQ reels was North America.  That is why there are many used for sale here.

Seems these days that many things in Europe are more expensive than here in the US.

But, just as here in the US —- worth a check, might get lucky.

I never make the same mistake twice.

I make it 5 or 6 times, you know, just to be sure.

I would think interesting/worthwhile abu Garcia reels would be more prevalent in Europe than they are here. That might be something worth asking them to look out for.

Straight up "ABU" or "ABU Ambassadeur" reels will be more prevalent in Europe and the UK, but ABU reels with the Garcia name attached will be much more prevalent in the US because Garcia was the US distributor for ABU bait casters & spincast reels, just like Zebco was to he distributor for the Cardinal line of open face spinners until, that is, ABU took over Garcia via the bankruptcy.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Lorcan

Greetings from Holland.

I can confirm that good DAM Quick reels (as well as parts) are probably both more plentiful and cheaper in the US. There may be a some odd exceptions, including the 220P Fred wrote about some time ago and the coloured 330N series.

There is the rare odd bargain to be found in fleamarkets, estate sales or thrift stores. Even at vintage tackle collector fairs you find 10 or many more Abu Cardinals or Mitchells and a few Cracks, Pelicans and Brettons for even DAM.

I suspect your friend will struggle to find enough to exceed the duty free allowance but you never know  :-)

Cheers, Lorcan
