They are off of the Oregon coast too.  We have talked about targeting them but so far no one is talking about it.

Down current of seamounts west of the continental shelf is where I would start.

When I was a deckhand on a Coos Bay based "6 pack" charter boat I built 2 heavy bent butt rods, bought a pair of International 70 reels, a large flying gaff and harpoon to target swordfish but could never interest clients.  The same for targeting salmon sharks.  I could never understand passing up 200 pound plus salmon sharks for albacore.  Oh well, the tips were good and the 99% of the clients were fun to fish with.

The reason I did not mention swordfish in relation to the Fathom E-reels is that swords are not a recommended application.
If swordfish are your target, the Penn's International Electrics are the way to go.
However, the E-Fathoms are just fine for sailfish.

I'm looking into the smaller Penn model now....but not for bigger fish

The factory drag specs for the 800 is 50# but I have observed that most if not all factory drag specs are a bit "exaggerated".
If you can get 40# of drag I think you would have a chance but I have never hooked a swordfish.

If I was 20 years younger and still had the 28' Tolycraft I would jump on one of the largest one of these reels.

I was still working on heavy industry then and had to keep it short to keep it out of machinery, not a good thing to have your head sucked into rotating machinery.

I do need to reiterate, it is a Fathom, and as such does not do what Internationals will do.
Max drag rating is only one factor.
Fathoms are outstanding reels that punch way above their weight class, but when you are asking a reel to do the ultimate, such as very large tuna and deep-drop swords, an International or other similar reel is required.
