I have this 9 fin nor I am putting back together. I have followed several schematics and think I have it right but obviously don't. The reel won't turn and sounds clunky if it moves at all. I included some pics as I was putting it back together. Maybe one of you can pick something out I am either doing wrong or perhaps a piece is missing? Any help? Thanks. Tom

Hi and welcome Tom,
It looks to me like the reel's missing the spool thrust spring, which sits between the drag plate and spool bearing, eg:

(Excuse the bad drawing!)
Without the spring, the drag plate sits against the spool and prevents rotation.
Hope that's of some assistance.
Let us know how you get on.
Good luck, Justin

I'm working on finding the spring. I got two of these reels that are in the process of getting working. Thanks for the help

I spoke with Tony sample and he graciously sent me the spring for this reel but I am still not getting anywhere. Anybody see anything I'm doing wrong 😣🤔?? The silver beveled piece is not on any schematic but came with the reel. I'm stumped

Take a look at this video , it may help even tho it is a 7 ..  I never did see that stepped bushing that you were holding in your hand .

Just 'cause it came with the reel, doesn't mean it belongs in it!  ;)  ;D
Encountered that meself - random parts supplied with miscellaneous reels.
Brian's schematic here:

Ditch the spacer and see how it all lines up.

I agree , I don`t think that stepped bushing belongs to that reel . Looks too thick and won`t let the brake come on .  I do not see it in the parts list eather .

Ok thanks for the words of encouragement. You guys are awesome. Still working on it.😣😀

Hmmmm... anybody think I have the wrong size drag lever? The reel is a 9 but if you compare the gear sizes they don't look like they match.

I spoke to Tony Sample in North Carolina and it does seem to be the wrong drag lever. He is a gentleman to say the least and has lots of fin not parts if you don't know him. Anybody looking for fin nor parts should try him 919 699 6187. I'll keep you all posted and thanks for the help. Murph

I'm just wondering if the drag washer is toast. Can any of you see anything unusual in any of the pictures? The reel works better but I think the bushing fits into a hole in the side plate to increase pressure so the spool can come in better contact with the cork drag. How thick is the drag washer supposed to be and if it's shot any advice on fixing or replacing it?

A couple of observations I made from your posts.

When you compare the gear to the one showing Dennis working on a similar reel in the posted video, the gear looks the same to me.

On the step bush issue, are you sure you didn't place it on upside down. The silver bevel thing (as you called it) looks like there's a matching ring imprint that agrees with the step on the bushing.
