Hello all and thanks for having me!  I'm new here so please bare with me as I figure everything out.  I have an old reel of my Grandfather's and am trying to resurrect it to its former glory.

I have looked through the forum as well as countless hours on-line (Google, Daiwa etc.) but am coming up empty on this reel.  It is a Made in Japan, Daiwa RS1600.  The issue I have is the anti-reverse mechanism is not functional.  I found a schematic and it looks like I need Daiwa part number B58-2401.  I have scoured the web but can't seem to find this spring or much information on an alternate solution.

Reaching out here to see if any of you experts have insight.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

Welcome Ryan! #40 looks like a fairly common type of spring. If nobody else has a possible source you might have to fabricate one. I have used hobby pliers with moderate success. They have smooth-cylindrical-tapered jaws and are mainly designed to bend metal in a tight circular manner.

I have a GS13 with that unique oscillation system in it, seems to function well.

Welcome aboard, Ryan!

Just looked at one of my ancient Daiwa Service Manuals with a Parts Interchangeability List.

Looks like the RS1600 shares the A/R Pawl spring with the RS1300, Part # B58-2401.

I have various 1300, 1600 sized Daiwas, etc.  But so far can't find a RS in 1300 or 1600 to do a bench match.  But I do have 1000's of loose A/R springs —- that would either drop right in —- or would not be tough to modify.

So if no luck with another member on here who might have the part, if you wish, you could ship me the reel and I would install a workable spring for you at no charge.  Just the postage both ways.

I never make the same mistake twice.

I make it 5 or 6 times, you know, just to be sure.

I agree with Greg & Fred. On a lot of these older reels where springs & parts are obsolete, most times a guy has to fabricate a replacement or modify an existing part that closely resembles what you are looking for.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Great information, and thanks for the kind welcome!  I was thinking that a DIY may need to be the solution and also great to hear that there may be some overlap on part numbers.  I don't suppose anyone has insight as to how the spring sits in the reel, do they?  I feel pretty confident I could fabricate a spring of sorts if I could wrap my head around how it sits and what the spring needs to look like.

A quick Google search shows quite a few RS1300's compared to the RS1600's.  If they have some crossover, I may try to pick up an operational RS1300, disassemble and (in theory) I should have a spring template.  I don't know much about the RS1300 but I don't know if I guy can go too far wrong having an extra reel around!

Fred, thank you for your offer to assist!  I may take you up on that if I am unable to get any specifics on the spring itself.

Thanks again, All.

It looks like the coiled section of the spring has the screw going through it. It also looks like the "claw"(part# 39) has a hole in it for a bent end of the spring to go into. Now you gotta figure out where the other end of the spring goes so pressure is pushing the claw against the anti-reverse teeth on the "drive" gear(part# 33)
My GS13S has a very similar schematic/parts list, dated 1979. "Claw", I like that, more descriptive than "pawl". mine has an ABU-like "anti-reverse claw", up underneath the rotor, so it's quite different. It's a silent anti-reverse, with no wire spring, but 2- "Dog Ears" that put pressure against an anti-reverse ratchet.

Thanks Gfish.  Yes, I think a little trial and error may be in the works for me.  I will mess around with some configurations and if someone happens to find anything more to the mystery, I am all ears.

Thanks again.
