I scored a brand new 1st gen Fathom 40nld2 and want to pair it with a jigging rod. The set up will be used for bft jigging with 300-400g jigs. The rod will also be used for deep water rockfish/lingcod jigging but with a different reel.

I'm thinking a phenix megalodon mpx-c 608 will handle both tasks well but wanted to hear others opinions.

Think about the rod you need for tuna, you can use it for rockfish but it will be overkill. Bring lighter stuff for rockfish, something with lighter line so it sinks faster and doesn't scope out so much
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Yeah the rod is rated for 250-400g jigs which is what you need to fish for rockfish in the fall due to depth restrictions. I'll use my 15nld2 with 30# braid on the rod when rockfishing

I do not have that Megalodon but the lighter one I have is nice.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

PJ - I pair my 40NLD2 w/a custom UC CXJ6004 to 250-400g jigs for bluefin.

Agree w/Sheridan that a lighter rod would be ideal for just rockfishing. And maybe a long fall stick at that.

Are you planning on using this rod for plus size tuna?  If so you would be better off with a 7' or 7'6" 80# or 100# class rod.

A good moderately priced one would be a Penn Carnage III West Coast Boat Rod CARWCIII80130C70 100# or CARWCIII60100C70 80#.

I caught this 212# BFT last May  on  a  friend's  loaner CARWCIII60100C70 with my International VISX 16 and 80#.

I already have a mak16 & pch741xxxh and mak20 & viper for nighttime jigging.  This setup is gonna be used for light nighttime jigging.

The Megalodon should work then.  It might get "sporty" if the plus size fish visit.

The fish were running 100-160 pounds when the one in the photo hit.  Two others got hit by larger fish at the same time but both got away, one cut off and the other pulled the line into the hull.

After a bunch of research and taking to a couple who fish them I decided on ordering the phenix megalodon mpx-c 608.

I ordered it online from J&H Tackle because they had the best price....$324 delivered!
