So I took apart a 5000c (circa 2004 AMBASSADEUR-5000C01-07BLACK )and discovered a bunch of new things i have never seen. One was a single eared anti reverse dog (very cool).... and now when i wanted to clean the bearings I looked in the spool and I found ONE ball bearing and ONE bushing lol. Even weirder I cannot remove the ball bearing (unsealed) to replace with a newer bearing. Take a look (on the right)....do I have to buy a new spindle? The ball bearing is wedged between a small brass bushing and some sort of small ring on the other side.....

The other end of the spool held a conventional bushing that slid right off the spindle and I just threw another standard steel sealed bearing I had laying around as an extra...

So do I have to buy a new spindle or the does the existing "wedged" bearing have a trick to it in removing?

thanks!

ps..Aha! I looked at the schematics and it appears the reel is NOT supposed to have bearings at all. Just 2 bushings. So the fella I got it from must have put in ONLY 1 bearing (why why why lol)...but my problem remains...it appears immovable...will I have to hammer it off? the bearing i mean

That brass colored part next to the ball bearing has got to be part of the shaft (key 802630).  That is what holds the bearings and spool in the proper location.  A web image search for ABU 802630 will verify... Yep- just a collar on one side, nothing on the other.  See below.

The ball bearing  should slide out the other side just like the plain bearing (key 19483). If it doesn't slide right off, there is probably some corrosion going on.  It seems unlikely, but if you have a good caliper/micrometer, you can check if the shaft is a tiny bit oversized for the ball bearing, making the fit a bit tight.

That brass ring on shaft next to the BB is stock. I dunno where you got the reel but it appears someone has monkeyed around in there. I have about fifty Abu's and nowhere is there is there a mix of brass bushing AND BB on shaft.

OK I just read the rest of your post (no glasses on). Yeah that dude was not doing a good. That brass ring is supposed to be there, and if you order one new, it will be on there. Don't try to remove. That reel should take 4 x 10 x 4 BB's; I'd put them in the spool, put the axle in, and let 'er rip. "C" means BB, so my guess is one BB acted up and he put in a bushing from a 5/6000. The 5000C should be essentially a lower geared 5500C. If you look at the schematic, it shows the same BB for both spool bearings.

The pic appears to show open bearing which is def not stock. Dave could be correct in that it is undersized on ID or corroded- either way it don't belong. If it won't move try heat and lubricant. If it still won't move, cut it off CAREFULLY with file or dremel. It ain't going back in. Polish shaft with 000 steel wool and keep on going.

At one stage, I had to place a block of wood on the end of the shaft, & give it a tap or 2, once you remove it, you may have to hone it a little, a bit of super fine steel wool, on the end of a drill bit, will do it, or a piece of wood douling split it down the centre, only about half an inch, then fit a bit of 3000  wet  dry into the doul, that will smooth it,as the wet n dry smooths of, you may have to remove a bit so it looks like new again, good luck, leave some fish in the water for us, cheers Don.
