I have a Penn 4200SS I have owned since new. It is a bit gravely, so I got a new set of bearings. I am struggling to get the clip out to remove the pinion bearing. It is a split ring, no ears. I always struggle with these type. I tried fish hooks, I had a 15 year old try.  Any tips?

Hi Jason —-

I use a strong hook on one side to keep the retainer from rotating —- then an old pocket knife with a thin blade to remove the retainer on the opposite side.  Just need to get it started and it will pop out.

Don't let it get away from you by entering a low earth orbit.

I got it with a hook. there were two split rings, one much thicker than the other. the both came out easily today.
The new bearings made the improvement I had hoped for. this reel is new again.
