It's been my experience, as a fan of stripping and flipping Penn rods that Penn 2 piece rods that claim composite tend to have a lower section that's straight carbon fiber because it's light and rigid. But the upper section is glass-carbon mix. You can see the "grain" of the CF on the lower section but it's not there on the upper. And they're painting over it so you know it's not an outer layer done for appearance like some rods.

Also I've seen where the squadron rods are called composite but the battalion rods are called CF but to the best I can tell, they're the same blank with different hardware. But the paint the squadron blank black (I remove the paint). I suspect they do it to make the battalion rod seem to be an even bigger step up from the squadron blanks.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.
