2062 Anti-Reverse retro-fit

Hello all.    I've been using my 2062 since the early 1970s and have replaced the bail spring, line roller & bushing, and the anti-reverse lever's compression washer several times.  I've prevented further "grooving" of the line roller by bending the pivot plate the roller goes into about 5 degrees or so - so the line crosses the roller on a slight angle instead of dead-one.   

I even had to replace the finger grip and it's screw/axle that goes into the handle due to wear. 

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to retro-fit another reel's anti-reverse lever assembly that has a positive spring loaded method of securing it in the on-or-off positions.  I'm really tired of the compression washer getting loose and the lever not staying in the desired position.

hopefully someone can help with this.  i'm certain it's not hard to work on as long as you have parts, but it's a reel that i've never come across before.  good luck!

A brass shim washer under the lever would let the screw clamp it down tightly.

Yeah. One of the weak spots on this model. If you don't have a tiny "wave shaped" spring washer, maybe you can fabricate one out of an existing thin metal one.

If you still have the nylon/plastic insert I would think that it should be fairly easy to bend a thin SS washer that will retain tension on the A/R lever, especially if the A/R spring is still strong enough to hold the dawg in place. Maybe you need to fabricate a new stronger spring.

Thanks for the idea but (oddly) the A/R doesn't utilize a spring at all, simply the compression of the plastic washer to hold it in place - either engaged or disengaged. And that of course weakens with use.  Oh well, there are lots of other vintage reels to use.

There's the problem.  The A/R dog/pawl has to jump up and down on the sprocket teeth.  It is usually a spring that makes it jump down between the sprocket teeth to hold it in place.  The schematic shows a small wire spring #16 here.

Yes, the Shakespeare 2062 actually does require a inner dawg spring to work correctly. If you don't have the spring that is probably why you have trouble with your reel. As Steve noted it is clearly on the schematic. You can see all the correct working anti-reverse parts here if you scroll down a few pics, and also here: BTW, the 2062 is on the left.

BTW, the spring part # on the 2062 Shakespeare schematic is actually X37.

Thanks for taking the time to post those photos!  I should have been more clear with my statement, as the 2062 A/R does indeed have a spring to hold the dog against the rachet when engaged (thus the clicking), but not to positively hold the lever in the "on or off" position.
