Lazy here, I know someone already has a 5000 walk-thru on here, maybe save me time looking with the link :o ?

I got 2-5000s on the way & would like to read up on it before they arrive.I have never tore into my 6500c3(new) or 4600c4 Royal Express,no need to yet.

It's stickied in the Abu section. If you decide to upgrade to bearings, be dang sure you mic them. There are different sizes that may be there depending on vintage. If 3x10x4, no issue, but the 60's models can have 3.125x10x4 which are hard to find without going a more expensive Boca route.

It's under 'Ambassadeur rebuild by Carolina Custom reels", so not readily apparent. I have been in that wormhole the last few months, and have another 6000 and 6500 on the way...

Who are the Ambassadeur gurus on here?

Tincanary comes to mind although there's other members who could help
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Gfish

No guru here. For me it's a "take your time" reel. I have a user '73 5000, a user '68 9000, an early '80's Ultra Mag Plus and a modern Revo-Toro- Beast. Even though the 9000 has no levelwinder, it still is like the others; many parts to deal with. Pay special attention to the drag stack arrangement and the spring orientation on the brake plate.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

I may fish the worser looking of the 2 & shelfie the prettier one.I guess it's not rocket science, I try to take pictures just in case I get interrupted during the process I don't forget

I don't find ambassadeur reels to be any more difficult than a jigmaster it's just different. No videos to offer though.

The backstop for the anti reverse on the early ones is the sideplate. So if you turn the gear sleeve the wrong way before it's assembled you have to disassemble again.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

The trip mechanism to put it back in gear when the handle is turned is complicated, by a double throw, but less reliable than most reels.  Over-engineered if you ask me.

Question #2

There are 2 small holes on the end of the handle knob(brass part)are they for oil? One knob didn't spin good I squirted some Lucas reel oil in both holes, now it does.

Question #3

Old coworker referred to the brake blocks as magnets, are they magnets or just brake blocks?

Question #4

Is the spool control set by only the tail plate knob(numbers) or a combination of both knobs? The brake blocks are on the handle side explain the science?

JasonGotaProblem

#2 probably.

#3 they are plastic. I don't think they're more magnetic than normal plastic. It's a friction brake.

#4 on an oldie the handle side knob is for centering the tail plate knob is cast control. On a C3 the handle side knob is cast control and there's no tail plate knob.

I haven't a clue what holes you're talking about! Let's see a photo.

Why are the brake blocks on the handle side? I'm guessing the brake plate was a convenient and available location to attach the friction ring rather than having to engineer a place for it on the tail plate.

What Jason said for the rest.

James's reel has a double handle, so has lube ports
