Thumb screws are on handle side. Most reels put the brake on the side that's easier to open, likely so they can be cleaned and adjusted more easily.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

If they could put the brake on the tail plate, then the brake blocks would be a lot less likely to dive into the carpet.  It's difficult enough to get everything lined up when seating the head plate without worrying about keeping it exactly horizontal at all times.

Where to buy brake blocks if you need them? I serviced this reel & don't plan on tearing it down anytime soon.I got another
One on the way for $30 looks ever better,I couldn't resist that price,I was the only bidder

e replacement parts, but expensive for a dot of plastic. The bay possibly, or Fred says DQ blocks work.

Are you looking for the newer style plastic blocks or the older style Bakelite?  I'm sure I have plastic blocks in my bin.  As for Bakelite, I don't have any, but you can make your own from the red straws that come on oils and penetrating fluids, like WD40 for instance.  Just use a razor to cut the size you need.

They don't have to be Bakelite,I just want some for backup. I am going to shelfie the best looking of the two 5000s & fish with the other.

I don't see any ports on that handle type either. But no photo was provided, so I'm done with it.

I got a chance to take a photo of the handle knob lube ports. The 2nd 5000 arrived,it actually was a 3 screw model & that 2 knob handle does not have lube ports.

The 3 screw 5000 was missing one brake block,I would like to get 2 sets if you have some Rob or anyone else,PM me for payment arrangements?

jgp12000

Rob,
I sent you a PM.

Thank you,
James

You are aware, James, that the 8312.. (I don't remember the last two digits) reel is most likely a Dec 1983 vintage model?

This is a first for me, never seen it before. To me however, they don't look like lube ports, but rather like something for a tool to grab on to for twisting. Can you tell if the knob is riveted or screwed on?

jgp12000

It's riveted one knob would barely turn until I oiled it?

Looks to me like tiny spanner wrench holes that would possibly allow removal of a knob retainer bolt/screw.

That makes sense, not sure there would be a need for 2 holes lube wise?
