Steve V.

Hello,

I have a few 308 reels that I need to get rods for. They won't fit on the newer rods I have (H2O, Mr. Crappie). Does anyone know of a modern Ultralight rod that the 308 will fit on without modifying the foot of the reel? I am not going to modify the reel. If all else fails I will take the reel with me to Academy and Bass pro Shops but I'd rather not.

Thanks,

Steve

BPS and Wright Mcgill both have yellow glass rods that I put 308 and 408's on for crappie and perch for under $25.

Any Fuji reel seat will fit it

If you search for this string  "Shimano FXS56ULC2 Fishing Spinning Rod" on ebay you'll see an ultra-light rod that I purchased 3 of earlier this year for $15 each + $5 for shipping. These are nice rods and my Mitchell 308, Penn 716 and Penn Greenie fit fine.  Also, the rods were well packaged in a heavy cardboard tube.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

thanks all - I've also struggled to find anything that will fit my 308.
As Jason says the Fuji reelseats fit, but there aren't many commercial rods with those on, have to build.
My 308 rod was built from a 6wt fly rod blank, with the Fuji seat, then I broke the rod closing a car trunk in the dark.. eejit.

My fallback was to get vintage rods. Any rod from the 70s or 80s will fit the Mitchell. Fenwick FS60 is a good rod and readily available, FS61 is a true ultralight but expensive and rare.
I have a Browning Silaflex spin rod from the mid-70s that is an excellent light rod, also a Phillipson Chieftain from the 50s.

Looks like you have the problem solved with that rod with slip rings. There are a lot of UL rods available out there with slip rings, some graphite & some composites. Not very many light action rods, though. That would be my preference in the first place as getting the ultimate balance in the way you use the combination is quite easily obtained with slip rings.

I don't know if the Prince reel foot is different can't imagine it would be? I like BnM rods & they have the "Sharpshooter" rod
w/ Tennessee handle with sliding rings. My goto crappie rod is
The Sharpshooter 6 you can feel the slightest tap.

With regard to slip ring rods, I prefer the aluminum rings rather than the graphite rings. The graphite rings are lighter but the aluminum rings are more compact, and for some reason I have a lot of trouble keeping the graphite rings in place. The aluminum rings will dig into the cork and never move unless you purposely move them.
