Building out a few DAM Quick reels this week for members.

Using new parts out of the bins —- so just like the DQ factory in West Germany over 50 years ago —- except these have modern synthetic lubes that will not harden over the years.

First off the bench this morning was a DQ 220N.

This is possibly one of the smoothest and most versatile reels for many types of fishing.  Trout, bass, catfish, walleye, lakers, pike, muskie, Stripers, etc.

At only 11.3 ounces, 19.7" of retrieve per crank, gear ratio of 1:3.6, all metal aircraft grade aluminum body and rotor, phosphor cut bronze main gear, steel worm drive, oversize main bearing, steel crank shaft.

New "N" features over the previous 220 are a new position for the A/R clutch on the backside of the rotor flange allowing for fast on and off operation.  It is smooth and noiseless.

Also a 3-stop switching position on the bail release which adjusts the hardness or softness of the bail release — depending on the type of fishing encountered.

Holds 220 yards of 6 pound mono with the spacer in place, and 275 yards without a spool spacer.  165 & 209 yards of 8 pound.

This is a lifetime reel, it will become an old friend —- not a plastic Asian Tupperware toss away.

Best, Fred

I have both the 220 and 220N, and I like the 220N better. The 220 is a better built reel, but IMHO the 220N is more comfortable to fish with. It's quieter, and when the anti-reverse is turned on it doesn't have that annoying vibration from the anti reverse clicking as with the 220. Too bad there was never a 221N.

Great build, Fred!

You can build a 221 n !!

How? Maybe change out main and pinion gear from a 331N?

I was not a fan of the couple of N models. Smoother, but I didn't like the A/R click sound.

Yes that is part of it .  https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,38989.0.html   You can build two versions small frame or large frame .

In the "N" version, braking is done on the rotor, not the main drive. This enables a longer working life of the drive pair because the braking forces are not transferred to the main drive pair. Invaluable compared to the previous version.

The number of stop positions on the rotor allows for much faster braking without much backward movement of the rotor. Also, an invaluable advantage over the previous version.

It is certainly more elegant. The housing of the main pair on the left is in one piece. There are no additional three screws like the previous version. The supports are longer, and the whole concept is simpler and stronger.

German engineers knew exactly what to do here.
It seems to me that the "N" version is lighter than the previous one for the same sizes because of all the above.

All true, but not being reversible meant the wife would be out of luck or have to learn to fish differently than previous models that were reversible. Seems to have gone backwards in some aspects of design.

If the wife is a fisherman, everything is forgiven.

;D        Well for the N models noise maker , there is a little rubber tube that should be on the anti reverse lever , it`s like a muffler    That and a little grease works also .  Grease is the answer for the Finessa models .

  The N model only convertible is the 331 and 441 .  With that said you can build 220 -221 -330 -331 -440 - 441 with that frame . It`s just swapping parts around .

Care should be taken not to degrade the brake function.

Since returning from Long Beach on Monday —- I have completed 5 reels.

DQ 275 Super 2-speed, 110N Microlite, 110 Microlite, 221 High Speed, and this 331 High Speed.

The 331 was from a client, and it contained considerable rust inside.  Now it is as new.  If you grease the eight holes on the backside of the main gear, and just slightly stretch the dog spring 1/16" —- the A/R clicking at every 45° is 90% eliminated —- and there is still solid A/R with no possible loss of contact.
