The 3500C you sent me is excellent, thank you very much.  This will make a nice project; making it a semi direct drive.  I have a driveshaft, drive gear, click wheel, and other required parts from a 5500D that I'm going to install.  Also, I'll be getting an Avail 3540 spool, round drag knob, and aluminum spool cap.  The 5500D stuff fits the 2500C and 3500C with a little modification.  The catch pins on the driveshaft need to be filed down 1mm so it works with the ABU press arm.  This will be a riot to use by the time it's finished.  That handle spinning backwards when playing a fish will put a big grin on my face.

I think that not having an anti-reverse actually gives better control, especially if the fish pecks or tries to kill the jig/bait before engulfing.  You can easily give it some line by lifting your thumb even if the boat is drifting or the current is strong.  Once you get rid of the anti-reverse you are free to also get rid of the drag.  Less mechanism is more fun.

I figured it was going to a good home, it needed some love
Do what you can with that you have where you are

At my worst, I used a cuban yoyo one day.  But, I'm better now.

Just tie a line around your finger. Who needs the yoyo?

And then there's noodling.

On topic: it took longer than I care to admit to realize that the 1500 and 3500 were just wider and narrower versions of the 2500. The 3500 with shallow spool is interesting. Probably similar casting to the narrow versions but more line cap
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

The 3500C shares a lot of parts with the 2500C like the clutch mechanism, level wind, line guide, cog, frame, and pinion bushing.  It's essentially a cheapened version, designed when ABU started to focus more on down-market products after they acquired Garcia Tackle Company.  The spool tension cap is located on the crank side and the tail shaft is exceptionally long that it goes through the pinion gear and bushing.  This causes a lot of friction so they don't cast as well as a 2500C unless you do extensive polish work to the tail shaft and inner pinion gear.  The spool width and the capacity are the same.  The nail in the coffin is the friction caused by the bushing under the tension cap.  When the clutch is disengaged, it causes the bushing to skew slightly off center so it presses against the tail shaft.  I don't mind though, I'm not building this for throwing tiny stuff.  My target lure range is 3/16+.  I'm going to use it for small top water baits.

Parts are coming in, just waiting on the drive gear and spool so I can get this show on the road.
