I have now had the opportunity to repair the gen ii,gen ii and gen iii small battles (3000/4000). The failure is in the casted gear as people grind the reels when line is stuck under the rotor. Penn made an improvement by making cnc milled gears and pinions to make iii dx and iv series. Does anybody know if these cnc gears will replace either ii or iii models.

Would be truly shocking if so. "Don't buy our new and improved model, just upgrade your old one!" Doesn't sound like a likely corporate strategy.

According to the notes on the Mystic site (I looked at a BTLii 2000 vs. BTLiv 2000) that while the reels have the same 6.2:1 gear ratio, the fine folks at Mystic have compared the parts and the CNC gears will NOT retrofit to the earlier reels.  I only took a moment to check the two models listed above, but based on that then it is probably likely that other models/sizes will be the same.) this note is under the description for the CNC gear part. - john

After looking mystic site says iv cnc main gear will  work  iii models. Probably good that you match pinon gear as well. Nice improvement when and if you have to replace iii main cast gear.

It's been pretty much standard preference for years, no matter the age, make or model spinning reel, that if one replaced the main gear with a new one they should also replace the pinion gear, and vice versa. Tooth wear on older gears will often end up causing a lot of problems & noise when only one of the gears is replaced.

Sometimes a damaged gear can be replaced with a used gear without too much conflict against the other old gear, but not very often.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Nice point! I have spinning reels that had either gear replaced due to wear. As i recall noisy reels. I have an alcedo micron reel that sounds like a grinder after main gear but that is the only part i could find!
