My 716 emblem was looking 50+ years old ;D To me the emblem is what makes a "Greenie" look good. I had to make it look as good as my custom "JGP"
rod Jason built. These emblems are fragile old & thin. I don't ever want to lose one. I gently pryed it off which I wouldn't advise unless you suspect it's loose. I slathered Mother's mag polish on it let it sit awhile & cleaned it with a custom cut acid brush. I rinsed it with water & Reapplied the Mother's adding water creating a slurry & rinsed with water again. Then I cleaned it with alcohol & brushed it with Spar urethane.

I glued it back on with Shoe Goo & hopefully will never have to ever do it again.Shoe Goo seems to last forever in my experience.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it's not rocket science to make these emblems. A lot of great reels are missing them .Whether its worth it or not for PENN
How  much would it really cost to tool up for this. I know a lot of us here have probably Passed on otherwise great "Greenies"

Those old greenie emblems were indeed classy looking.  I reglued and cleaned many of those on my greenies.

I'm missing an emblem for a 714Z -- not as classy as those on the greenies, but I'd like to have it just the same.

Helmsman is great Spar Urethane, but it will eventually yellow, similar to other Spar Varnishes.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Well, they're 3-D printing everything else lol. Or is there too much detail? Know nothing about 3-D printing.

While it would be nice for Penn to make these emblems for us —- it probably wouldn't make much sense for them to do so.

However, like you state, James —- it is not rocket science.

There are dozens of firms that can manufacture custom small round metal emblems.  They can copy the originals exactly.  Generally $10 to $20 each.  I would suspect if you ordered 25 to 50 —- you could get a very good per piece price.  Then sell the extras to our members.  The profit would pay for the initial outlay, yours would cost nothing —- and you might end up with a few extra bucks.  Tech has come a long way in 50 years.  I suspect that Penn outsourced their emblems from other sources also.

For me, on a 716/714, a penny works perfectly.  Here are a couple of examples with a steel and a copper cent inserted.  The fit is spookily dead perfect.  An Indian Head penny looks really cool also.

Now, there will be some folks that say you shouldn't make aftermarket emblems —- everything should be original.  But that is OK, they can do what they want with their reels, and I'll do the same with mine.

A silocone mold off the original and a bronze powder/resin casting is probably your best choice.

I wonder if Penn stamp them themselves or just had another company stamp them.
But you would think somebody has the dies !

There is a coulp U tubes on making dies and pressing coins or slugs with a press.
I wonder what it take to get a penny press machine and have dies made ?

Rub tin foil and fill the backside with epoxy or you can use playdough .

The penny machine is just a roller press that is geared way down so a human can turn it by hand.

But die making is a whole other world.  Somebody probably carved the master hub for Penn pretty much by hand with a vertical milling machine.   These days it could be knocked out with a computer numerical controlled milling machine or CNC laser cutter.

If you really want to go the stamped metal route:  As Fred mentioned, there a a bunch of challenge coin/lapel pin makers out there.  In addition to being willing to make enough for a minimum order size, you will have to deal with the service potentially refusing due to copyright issues- you are copying a Penn part with the Penn name, model number and artwork on it, and finding a service that will use a suitable corrosion resistant alloy.  Straight decorative brass may not be a good idea.

This is different than making and selling a replacement drag knob or crosswind block.

The "greenie" Penn 716 with this style of emblem was only manufactured for about a 3 year period ('76-'77 approx.). Then Penn switched to the black & gold 716Z, which had a different badge.  The emblem was sold with the sideplate in those days.  On the Z's, the badge was a separate item.

Not telling anyone what to do —- but if I were doing the project, I would figure since the company discontinued these reels nearly 50 years ago, and parts support shortly afterwards —- I would just find a supplier to make these (likely for about $8-$10 each if a lot of say 50 were ordered).

Always easier to ask forgiveness, then permission.  Permission is generally a NO, and/or a lot of red tape.  If not competing with a company, and not making a business out of it, and 5 decades have gone by —- personally, I'd just go ahead.

But we all make our own calls.

I am going to send this to Tony to get his input.

Hi JGP,

What is your exact question?

tony

oldmanjoe

Well I ask a few .    Did Penn stamp their own Greenies emblems in house , or outsourced .
Can they be reproduced BY  penn or can someone do it without worrying about patent infringements ?

Would PENN consider manufacturing
Greenie emblems again ?

There are alot of great reels out there  missing them & the emblem just makes it complete.

Thank you,
James

Hi Joe,

I do not have data on where the emblem(s) were actually made, our facility in Hegins, PA made our spinning reels up to approx. 2005 and most tooling, dyes, fixtures, etc were all destroyed about 10 years ago.  I would assume a Vendor local to Hegins, PA made the emblems or they were produced in PENN Hegins..  Making a few hundred emblems is not something we would consider doing at this current time. I put a buffalo nickel on my larger greenie, looks like it belongs :)
