hi guys, Ive a old reel that makes a grinding or sort of slipping noise sort of like the gears aren't engaging when winding it turns forwards and backwards, do think it could be the anti reverse lever  or the cog. any replies would be much appreciated,,thanks..

You may have more then 1 problem....
Open it up and take some pics...

Roller bearing (if it has one), Anti Reverse pawl (they break and wear out)..
Also the skipping feeling could be Level wind gear missing teeth...?

The backward turning handle is Definitely a Anti Reverse issue - but what??

Just hard to trouble shoot.........

Hello. The Swedish Syncro is covered by 4 variations.... Hopefully no-one's made a frankenreel over time. Can you flip it over, and post the first four numbers on the frame foot.  As per Mr. N's post above, long distance diagnosis can be a real challenge without important details.  

When you say your crank goes backwards....does it continue all the way around, or does it stop about halfway around? Syncros are supposed to go backwards for about half a rev, but not all the way round.

Your grinding noises can be symptomatic of gear wear, crud, or mis-alignment of parts. And more.

The beauty of Abu: popular models, regardless of age, will still have parts available !!!  The last variation of the syncro was 1999. the introduction year was 1988. chances are real good your reel can be easily repaired, to live ~another~  25 years.

thanks for the quick replies guys, the numbers on the reel are 06-68-0-68 if that means anything,the reel spins both ways now, i unscrewed it and the reverse dog had fallen out now for some reason,i also noticed the plastic bit that holds the pinion in the metal clip seems loose but i'm not sure if there meant to be like that.

You're looking for a schematic beginning with 89-0
Seems to me it's the second revision (?) as your reel was produced 89/90.

Ye olde reverse serial number !!    For right-handed reels, orient the reel with the crankside pointed to midriff. In my case, potbelly...     Unsure why Mike's drawing is fuzzy. Purefishing's clearer.

The little plastic collar on the pinion gear is OK loose. it fits the yoke only one way, so all will be well.  The anti-reverse dog's leaves straddle the teeth on the driveshaft. If the leaves have spread over time, for about 3.00, it's better to just replace the dog, rather then adjust the leaves. Most times, the adjustment fails.  

Check your main gear for a sort of thin "J" pattern on the bottom of each tooth. Check your pinion for really thin edges, like an airplane prop. These will be the main source of grind: wearing gears, from fishing with no lube, and of course, length of service to date.

Hmm... It's a given that life does happen, situations change, and folks are hoping for a solution to a situation at the speed of light. By the same token, leaving folks hanging by not offering a reply to the solution whether fixed or not, offered by the folks with the solutions, seems somehow one-sided, in a repair forum.

Long way to say you replied quickly at the start, and are allowing days to lapse, with a report back as to how you are doing with the reel !! Remember: the readership at repair forums includes lots of hits, perhaps including folks with the same problem as yours..who are ~also~ hoping for a solution !!
