Not to get off the subject, but I rebuilt a 116A last night that had the spacer removed and had an 11 stack with a Belleville on top. I couldn't see this helping without any more keyed washers since they were stacked out of the main gear. I put a spacer back in and went with the standard Seven.
The spacer I had in my parts was a little thinner than the one in my 12/0, but it seems to be working fine.
There is a very small amount of drag with the star backed all the way off.

The eared washers have to be in the gear to work, you can have one keyed washer out of the gear.
