Hi Alan / guys

I bought an almost new Penn 525GS reel about year ago - I just love this small reel to bits with all it's strong, quality & durable parts.

The reel still had the original grease and oil in it, but anyway I stripped the reel totally, cleaned & relubbed it.

From the beginning I could never get freespin with the spool - I took apart the bearings a few times and cleaned it, but still the same problem.

Then I did a previous post regarding this issue and was told not to uneven tighten the sideplate, maybe dirt inside the pinion etc - the reel was again cleaned and the screws tighten in different manners but still no freespool - not even 1 second.

Ok then I moved to the next area of solution that could help solve the problem and it could only then be the bush in the sideplate.

I took out the bush for the moment and then I got all the freespooling I was looking for - problem solved?

The problem was that the spool shaft was pushing against the bushing and after inspection I found that the spool shaft was on the one side (looking from the side to where the bushing need to be) about 1mm off centre and that caused the friction on the spool shaft.
I also checked if the spool shaft ran uneven because of damage or so but it was running in one straight line - no bends.

I loosend the screws again and retightend but could not get the spool shaft to run centre inside the bush - if I loosend the sideplate screws alot the friction is better but don't wanna risk to loose screws.

Can anybody please help me or give me info on how to resolve this problem - I desperatley want to fish with this reel but I never could because of this issue. It's now been over a year and the reel is till laying in the box and never been used.

Regards

if the answer is what i suspect, you will really kick yourself.  if you over-tighten the side plate screws, you will torque the frame and cause a rub between the spool and frame.  if the frame remains unevenly or over torqued for a long period of time, the change in the frame can be permanent.  you might have to get a dremmel and grind away at the frame to free up the spool.

Thanks for the quick reply Alan but nowhere is the spool touching the frame, it's only the spool shaft that touches the cast control knobs bushing.

Pull up the schematic.  What # is the bush?  I'm not sure what you are talking about.  Sorry.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

The right side bushing nr 26.

Its right under the mushroom cap

That's correct the bushing under the cast control cap.

Any info would be appreciated :o

The frame seems tweaked. It's possible to fish the reel without the bushing. Mane reels do not provide a bushing in that area.

you could remove the bushing and check it for runout. It's possible the bushing I.D. is not on center. If it is the bushing, you can replace it with a new one. Strange things can happen in the manufacturing process.

Hi Charlie it's defnitley not the bushing, I checked it, if u look inside the area where the bush is(when it's taken out) u can see that the end of the spool shaft is about 1mm of centre.

Hi Bryan well this is very disappointing if the frame is scew, like I said the reel is almost brand new. Is there no other way to correct this problem - I don't want to remove the bushing cause then it's a open area to the inside of the reel - for sand, water etc to get in there. The bushing helps alot by preventing this.

Even though I have never owned a 525GS I have 6 525 Mags. I have seen the Cage/frame of a GS before and know they are completely different.
The spool of the GS has the spindle pressed in and is not removable, therefore there are only 2 bearings(part 26&40), a pinion gear(13), right bushing(26A), 2 Metal Thrust washer (40B&C), 1Rubber Thrust washer(40D), and Spool tension Cap(26B) involved in the spinning process.

I would do what is called a Stare & Compare.

Notice that the bearings and metal thrust washer have different part # for each side..

Notice that the rubber Thrust washer goes between the metal thrust washer(40B) and the Cap(26B)

Did you soak the bearings in Brake cleaner and did spin freely(5>10sec) before adding 1 drop of oil (TSI 321* recommended).

Notice only light oil* on spindle, no grease!

Before you attach the right side plate did the spool spin freely? (Pinion {13} center no grease)

Thrust Knob is what controls your spool rotation, is there a slight side movement (knock) when you move spool left and right after reassembly.

Good Luck, let me know if this works.
