so, i've been looking at these reels as a beefier replacement to abu 6500 reels for bigger salmon in the northwest....did you ever figure out what caused the slight grinding/imperfect condition after replacing the bearings etc? was it a bent shaft or? They appear to be super durable..just wonder if it was user error or manufacturer quality.

Photo Gallery / Re: Adding a bearing to a Penn...

Hi jurelometer,

That is an insightful analysis and I do appreciate the feedback.  I was originally going to replace the bushing with a SS needle bearing because it would have been much less machine work.  However, two issues kept me from going that route.  The first being that the shaft wasn't hardened and second there was no easy way to create a thrust surface for the clip to ride against. I guess I could have used bronze washer but that seemed much less elegant.

The bearing I chose, Enduro 71801 LLB, is typically used in the cycling industry for hubs and pedals.  I couldn't find a data sheet so it would be difficult to verify their claim of ABEC 5 and 235 lb-ft static load.  Only time will tell if the rubber seals and stainless steel will last in a saltwater environment.

Does this application require an AC bearing?  Probably not.  If the engineers at Penn think that two deep groove bearings is the correct approach who am I to argue? E.g Penn Torque 40 NLD2

Was there in improvement?  Absolutely.  Without a doubt turning the handle is way smoother.  Is the improvement due the AC bearing, I doubt it.  I think any ball bearing would have worked.

I'll use the AC bearing this season to see if I run into any issues.  If I do I can always replace it with an OEM Penn bearing.

Have a VSX 16 and when the reel drag lever is backed off, and reel has free spool, when you turn the hand crank, it sounds like the clicker is on and very loud even though the spool is not turning and the clicker is in the off position.

When the clicker is engaged and you peel line off the spool the clicker is on and loud as it should be, when the clicker is off and line is pulled and spool turns clicker is silent.

I have always assumed that when a reel is in free spool and the handle is turned there should be no clicker noise, maybe I am assuming wrong but wish it worked that way....

As it stands, every rotation of the handle sounds like the clicker is on all the time when clicker is not engaged to the on position.....Drives me nuts.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Tools and Lubricants / REEL OIL IN LARGER CONTAINERS
Last post by kevin cozens - April 27, 2024, 09:33:50 PM
i service a lot of reels and get through a fair amount of oil and grease.
Getting large tubs of grease is easy but i cannot find large size bottles
of oil. I can get WD40 in large containers as well as 3in1 and light machine oil
but these types of oil are not really the best type to use unless its for the
handle
A one pint or 250ml size would be great but every one i have seen are dinky
little bottles which dont last 5 minutes.
Does anyone knowwhere i can get large bottle from and what oil is it.
I would like a UK supplier if possible

Quote from: Recoil Rob on May 14, 2019, 08:40:49 PMI just found these, get a good review from some RC Model guys so I took a chance, price is right. will report when they arrive.

They showed up today and are well made, definitely JIS, very happy.

JIS screwdrivers are essential for Japanese made reels such as the big sealine models. if you use a normal phillips or pozi there is a much higher risk of rounding the screw head. personally i change them out for stainless hex head screws and grease them up when i fit them
