Bronze gears will strip out. That's why they make stainless steel upgraded gears,

It looks more like nickel plated steel to me,

Jason check it with a magnet and you will know.

Quote from: JasonGotaProblem on April 25, 2022, 10:12:50 PMIf I had a problem with brass or bronze I'd have a problem with a lot of awesome reels with reliable gears. My issue is with the plating, for reasons I think I learned from you. Either way I'm looking forward to fishing it.

Something about that chrome plating was making the back of my brain itch, but couldn't remember why.  And not chroming an internal part is cheaper than chroming, so there must be a reason.

Used the interwebs to look it up.  There is decorative chroming and hard chroming.  Hard chroming is used to make a tougher, lower friction, non-galling surface on mechanical parts.  For big expensive machinery, worn mechanical parts are sometimes reconditioned by  hard chroming and then ground back down to spec. The bore of some firearms are hard chromed.

If the gear is indeed chromed bronze,  I would probably chalk it up as a case of design overkill, as opposed to something cheesy and cheap.

At the risk of re-beating a dead horse, I don't think it is  correct to keep lumping bronze and brass together. Or to dismiss all bronze alloys as inferior materials.

Bronze is a wide range of copper alloys, usually containing some tin.  There is bronze and there is bronze... The best bronze alloys (check out aluminum bronze) when properly tempered combine both toughness/hardness in the same ballpark as some carbon steels plus very good  saltwater corrosion resistance, and a low coefficient of friction.  Here is a comparison of 316  stainless and aluminum bronze: https://www.makeitfrom.com/compare/AISI-316-S31600-Stainless-Steel/UNS-C95300-Aluminum-Bronze

Brass is a primarily a copper/zinc alloy that is quite soft, and not that great over time in terms of saltwater corrosion, as the zinc content gets leached out sort of like a sacrificial anode. Or something like that...

And another..

No mention of firearms.

I think they are hard chrome plating the bore of a steel barrel, not making a bronze barrel and chroming it.  The chrome is supposed to wear better.   Also don't know how common it is.  I am not a gun guy.

I gotta put my money on Robert when it comes to  anything to do with Everol.  But the magnet test is a good idea.

The everol finally has a worthy home. At least I think so.

i like it, specially the thin gold ring on the rear grip

I'm still trying to decide if I like that band. I wanted a bit longer rear grip, and the material above the band is a bit softer EVA for a better feel in hand (with hard EVA below for better rod holder protection) and i had to do something about the transition. That's what I settled on. Time will tell if it was a good idea.

I sorta used this thing for the first time today. No boat but high winds. So I hooked a cheap cut of steak to a balloon and let it float out. What self respecting shark could resist this?

But someone else got there first.

Jason - Did you just run it back out?  That's a beautiful rod, cool reel, your baits are getting bigger, the fish will follow right? - john

when you said, Steak, YOU mean Beef Steak?

I've never used Beef meat to fish on saltwater, you should have returned that Catfish back to the water but hooked on the nose and wait for the SHark to bite

sorry I missed these replies. Yes I meant beef steak. I sometimes go and look for cuts of meat on sale to use for sharks if I don't have any proper cut bait available, as was the case then.

I did not throw it back out on the hook. These florida saltwater catfish don't fight almost at all. They just wait for you to reel them in knowing you're gonna let them go, so they can go steal another bait. So I had no idea he was on the line til I reeled him in, and at that point my small window to fish had closed. Plus, I've tried to use catfish as bait in the past, even sometimes cutting off the spines first to make them more appetizing, and once cutting one in half to see if the blood attracted any sharks. Never caught anything on one. never even a hit, or a stolen bait. It seems even other fish hate florida catfish.

On paper at least the combo has landed its first catch. But in Brevard county the saying is "catfish count as -1" so I'm not sure its a good thing.

I'm potentially going east again this weekend, but the atm pressure is gonna be so low I'm not sure its worth buying bait.
