"Edited as per Moderators to correct Scott's Bait & Tackle over to their new store name Mystic Reel Parts / www.mysticparts.com"
I can't wait for payday this week...
I got me four fixes! I'm all set! ;D
Did you get that Brake Ono?
I got the brake Daron. I'm gonna use it to upgrade my 9/0 with Alan's new Hex gears. I'm gonna get max drag out of it.
Does the gear set come with ss pinion gear if not where do we purchase it
It comes with the Main gear and the pinion.
Ok perfect
One more question. Are drag kits available for the hex gear set or do we have to cut them ourselves??
You will have to cut the carbon fiber for the drags on the Hex. The Penn keyed washers fit. You don't use the eared washers. Bob
They are a royal PIA to cut too. I think you might have bitten off more than you can chew here Topshot!
.140 CF sheet is the way to go and it is pretty much unobtanium right now.

Oh I will prevail you just wait!!! Would it be possible with 1.2mm? Or would stack come up short??
I can help you out with those actually. ;)
I tried some .120 CF and the .140 is a lot more rigid and works much better for this application.
Sal used .140 on his testing.
Just stock penn keyed washers and .140 hex drags are the hot setup! ;)

I just need a set for the raffle 9/0 I can wait for the reel I'm building for myself. I don't want to let anyone down
If you have 1.20 sheet. It will work. The ones I tried weren't laminated. The Laminated CF sheets have some white material in between the Laminated CF. It makes them more rigid and they just work out better for the Hex setup. There is a guy on ebay Sal hooked me up with. Eric, He is a great guy and will give you a discount if you buy a couple sheets.

I know exactly who your talking about. He had 1.4mm for a while but his connection for cf sheets when under and he's in the process of working something out with a new guy
Whats the difference between the hex drag and the eard drag washers? Im building a 9/0 and want this thing to be a tank so im trying to find out everything I can. Thanks for the help and soon as I have the money I will be placing a order for these
The Hex Drags have to be custom cut to fit in the gear. It is not round like the factory gear. It almost doubles the reels drag capability.

Didn't Sal test these hex gears and pinions up to 50lbs with the 9/0 ?
...asking 'cause it's a slippery slope for me to look it up this late at night :P
because I'm thinking 130lb spectra now... it'd cut the fight time in half vs. upgraded stock fishing 80lb mono.
(not for me, but a friend who only fishes braid to wind-ons)
as for me, I've already got my 2 sets of steel gears, thank to Al ;) ..but I"ll still have 4 more reels to upgrade
for guys that fish hard and intend to push these reels to the max..
I'll still need at least one for myself though ;)
Yes he did Erik, But when he tested them a second time, they failed. Black pearl is reworking them in 416 stainless and Sal should be testing the new pinions in a few days.

Aloha Erik!
I'm glad your reel arrived safely. Since you have the factory steel gears already, how about considering Bryan's custom drag set?

Just a thought...
We're on the same page Al..... already on their way bruddah!
Yeah, and thanks again for the 9/0, you're a gentleman and a scholar! 8)
Erik, You're building these so Ben can't even break 'em ;) You ain't sparing nuttin' ... I like your style!
Daron, those washers looks precise and done well... what thickness did you go with (CF washers) and how many metal and CF will the hex accommodate?
Thanks
Dom
Four Stack of .140 Dom with Stock Washers. This was Sal's set up when he tested the gears. Unfortunately, the .140 is unobtainium these days. :'(
Just got my order of the 1.20mm, those will do just fine. You would actually get away with 1mm, but wouldn't go any lower.
If anyone is new at this custom cut washers, try not to use anything but laminated carbon fiber washers.
I did all three of my hex gear sets with 1.2mm laminated carbon fiber. I was able to get 5 carbon fiber washers in the gear. I did put a couple of Bryan's thin washer in each gear to make sure the top eared washer stayed seated. It worked with stock washers but only about half of the eared washer was seated. Bob
5 Stack with the .120. Four stack with the .140
Hopefully Eric will have some more .140 in the future. Those sheets are Tough! >:(
I'm looking forward to a set with the new pinion for my 9/0
Me too Adam! ;D
Me three! I need another super gear ;D
chomp chomp chomp ;D ;D ;D
Hi all,
This 9/0 gear set is ready for order. The new heat treated SS pinion arrived this morning.
Thanks,
--Alan
Does this work on the 115L2 or just the 115l?
I have used it on a 115L2 Bridge, but replaced the sleeve with a 115L Model.
The L2 used a different handle nut, but It will still work.
The main and pinion gear have the same part numbers.
