Title: let's make sure everyone feels welcomed.
Post by: alantani on May 02, 2011, 02:09:34 AM
seems kind of funny that i would say this, huh!  there is no bullying here.  there is no profanity.  no one has ever called anyone an idiot. and yet, some people still feel akward posting things.  usually they're just starting out and need to ask a question that we've answered a dozen times.  they might have done an unsuccessful search already because the search function on this board does not work very well.  there are alot of problems that will crop up, and most of us know how to fix them, yet someone just starting out may come across these problems and see them as insurmountable. the reason that i know this is because these questions are often still directed to me in a pm or e-mail.  and i still answer every one.  not always right away, but i do answer them.

but everyone should feel comfortable posting questions here, right?  well, apparently some people don't.  something funny has happened.  we appear to have attracted some serious talent.  that's fine.  but we also have developed a sense of camaraderie, and that makes some new people hang back.  we all know what it's like.  you're the new guy, maybe at work, maybe a new club of some sort.  a bunch of guys are standing in a group, all laughing and having a good time.  unfriendly?  definitely not!  and if a new guy approaches, is he welcomed?  absolutely, yes!  but for many, a group like that is still difficult to approach.

so what to do?  well, here's my suggestion.  when someone posts a question, let's all make an effort to concentrate and stay focused on the new guy and the question that he has.  keep the side banter to a minimum and let's not get sidetracked.  if you think of a side issue, consider a separate post.  very few threads on any board stay focused on the original question once it get's past a half dozen responses.  to me, it's important that a guy can come in here and feel like he can get help he needs.  we were all "the new guy" at some point in our lives, and we've all had to turn to one person or another for help before.  i hope this will work for everybody!  rob, thank you.  and to everyone else, got a question?  post it on whatever board is close to your topic and you WILL get a response.  even if it's an "i dunno....".  we are all here to help.  alan

Well said Alan.  And note, we have awesome moderators that have upheld and have deleted postings that do not meet these standards.  We may miss some, so if you feel the response is inappropriate, PM me and I'll surely do something about it.

I really can't add to what has already been said, this is one fantastic site where people can come and learn about reel service and repair. Alan set the standards from the very beginning and held onto those standards. What ever we can do to help new members is what we need to do. Thanks Alan

This is one great site that Alan especially, and all the members have made so good. There is so much talent and experience here and the new members are adding to it without question. You never know whether it's someone with a professional hobby (like Alan) or the experienced reel shop owners or the oldest or newest member is going to have a trick or little tidbit that makes the task/process of maintaining reels easier. That's why we're here, so let's enjoy the special bond we all have.

This is the only site I feel comfortable in my inabilities knowing that one or many of you guys will give me a hand without passing judgement.  We all gotta start somewhere with this technical stuff... what better place than right here?!  I also, enjoy helping other fisher people with my new found abilities, so it's a perfect match.  I tried Bloodydecks and Stripersonline, but those are some tough crowds.  If I'm not certain about something I won't post it anywhere near those sites, which is why I'm here in the first place... to learn not brag.  If I'm certain about something... I'm not learning, so I'm here for the duration!  I talk about this site so much that when I have "company" over, and go to the balcony for a smoke they ask, "Are you going on Alan Tani?" (no kidding- it happened as recent as yesterday)  I got a laugh out of it! I love this place,  have met some pretty awesome people on here, and become a more all around better fisherman.  Welcome aboard new comers!

When I found this site, I knew that I had found a place to share some good ideas and, more importantly, to learn from some rather crafty, knowledgable folks! I felt welcomed from day one and I appreciated the fact that I could ask all my reel questions and they would be considered and answered in a professional, respectful manner! I think it's important that we extend the same courtesy to the newer members as they find their way around this terrific site!
Happy Fishing to All! Sal

I joined Bloody Decks in 2004 and have Zero posts on that site. It's still a little intimidating here with the talent pool of people who haunt this site, That being said I respect the talent and all are very helpful.
Thanks all, Brendan.

brendon im on bloody decks too. thats exactly what alan doesn't want this site to turn into. so alas no swearing no bashing etc. welcome aboard and dont feel intimidated, we all started out by stumbling on this great site after fumbling on a reel or two.
Title: Re: let's make sure everyone feels welcomed.
Post by: alantani on May 04, 2011, 08:54:19 AM
thanks, guys.  you know, bloody decks is actually not the website i had in mind when i wrote this.  it was another.  we'll call it "brand x."   post anything on brandx.com and "the group" immediately chimes in.  and i mean on every post.  even if they know nothing about the topic.  part of it is hijacking.  most of it reflects the strong friendships that have developed over the years.  it can leave other people feeling left out.  THAT is what i want to avoid.

I've only been a member for a month or so and I have to say everyone including Alan (LOL) has been extremely helpful and friendly.  I've learned a ton on here and have had a great time modifying my reels.

I've installed drags in all my large reels, added 2 jvarance frames to my 2 133h reals (shimmed the bearing in one), installed one of Alan's handles on my 144HLW, and ordered and installed the Trind DX parts on my TOR20.

Now it's time to do some fishin!

The different vibe here, dare I say more adult and professional, is one of the very best things about your board Alan.
I'd hope that anyone new would feel at ease asking ANY question, I'm sure we all remember being new!

I had questions I wanted to ask but were reluctant to " join up & register", however, after reading this blog I feel quite comfortable, and have taken the plunge and joined up.  Thank you Alan for producing such an excellent forum.

Yes, I was definately one of those at the bottom looking up.  I've experienced some real nasty people who can for what ever reason be ultra "teritorial".  It could be at school, work, or at a fishing spot.  I have met some real secretive fisherman who don't believe in helping others.  :(

Thats okay, I believe that if I don't learn it from one person, eventually I'll get the answers from someone else.

Since finding this site, the people here have been totally excellent, without judgement, very professional, and honest.

Even after working on several penns and newells, I somehow still have questions about different situations that always creep up on me that leads me to seek advise from the guys here.  :)  Till today, they have all been very supportive and funny at times....And I thank each of you for that....

Thank you Alan, Brian, and the gang for such a wonderful and informative hang out!  :)

Well said Greg - couldn't agree more.
Thanks Alan and team, and Merry Christmas to all.
PS My wife (and kids) got me a fishing reel for Christmas - haven't seen it yet of course (two more sleeps!), but apparently it's a Jigmaster 500 with a Newell 99 frame and spool. Feeling very fortunate.  ;)
All the best for the festive season.

Hello all. I'm new to both forums and fishing. I really appreciate the atmosphere you all make an obvious effort to foster and maintain. As I started on my journey to learn to fish, my time poking around on the interweb turned up Alan's name too often to not pay attention.

I'm something of a tinkerer by trade so I registered for the site and dove right in to taking apart my Penn 320 gt2 with the help of Alan's wonderful tutorial.  Everything was going well until I fat fingered the dog spring and it shot into history.  Well, back to the store tomorrow.  :D

I have to say, I'm looking forward to this year's adventures on the Chesapeake and learning and sharing with the 'ohana that you have created.

Thanks everyone!

hi    guys           i joined awhile ago, i don't remember how i stumbled onto this site, but it was one of the best stumbling things i did.  not only is it very informative with very knowledgeable people, it has some very generous fishing and reel repair guys. iv'e purchased some parts very reasonable, traded reels,  iv'e had  reels and parts sent to my house by these wonderful guys because when i joined i posted that i was handicapped and couldn't really fish anymore, so picking up reels here and there gave me something to do.  refurbishing, repairing them and just collecting the reels became a hobby, or should i say an obsession, i love it, and i can honestly say iv'e never sold a reel, i have given a couple away to needy guys, but thats what it's all about, help one another.  so, i'm very fortunate to have joined this site and have become friends with a bunch of wonderful guys. my best to all of you, and like alan says welcome new people with open arms.     harryk

So I waited 2 days to be able to go buy new dog springs.  When I sat down to put everything back together, I found the elusive dog spring stuck on some grease IN the reel  :o. Well, it's good to have spares.

Just throwing my two pennies in as a new guy myself.

I've got my first posts up here and in very short order I've had help, advice, opinions, and even help picking up a HIGHLY sought after part that if I hadn't been looking for I know would've been gobbled up.

My observations so far: even when people disagree on here, it doesn't resolve into an argument or waste-disposal-distance-contest. I've gotten help and seen good discussions that make it clear that this is a group of adults whose primary goals appear to be learning and helping. The regulars know enough that they can't be BSd and question less than solid information to help someone from being misled. This keeps out the know it all's and the ones who just want attention.

I was originally brought here thinking that it would be a parts/service site like Scott's and ended up staying once I'd seen what it really was. It's a hotrod shop where everyone is able to look at others as friends instead of competition and that says a lot.

There is never a question that is a dumb question except for the question you don't ask. Alan and all the moderators here are very helpful and eager to share their knowledge of reel repair with you. Don't be insulted if somebody has a different opinion than you do on a certain topic. There is more than one way to skin a cat. A big thank you to Alan and all the other helpful and informative people on this website. I appreciate your help and great wisdom that you provide unselfishly. Keep up the good work.

You've come to the right place.

Read the past posts of interest, and feel free to ask questions for clarification, etc..  If you have specific reels you are working on, and run into troubles just post some pics and someone should be able to help you out.

Welcome, FB3 --

Your interests may evolve or change, as you study the posts on this site.

But, for now, there are plenty of folks to help with any of the reels you have mentioned.

All good, solid choices for your reels of interest.

Best,

Fred

Waydown, welcome.  To all the folks on this site I recommend that you go back and read the first page of this thread.  Alan posted some well thought out ideas on how he wants this site to operate.  It helps to refresh ourselves with what Alan Tani's mission statement, or directional statement is supposed to operate and how its members are expected to act.  There is no need to respond to this post.  Just go back for a refresher course.  For the most part our members follow the rules which makes our moderator duties easy.  Kudos to the good job our AT members are doing.  Dominick

seems kind of funny that i would say this, huh!  there is no bullying here.  there is no profanity.  no one has ever called anyone an idiot. and yet, some people still feel akward posting things.  usually they're just starting out and need to ask a question that we've answered a dozen times.  they might have done an unsuccessful search already because the search function on this board does not work very well.  there are alot of problems that will crop up, and most of us know how to fix them, yet someone just starting out may come across these problems and see them as insurmountable. the reason that i know this is because these questions are often still directed to me in a pm or e-mail.  and i still answer every one.  not always right away, but i do answer them.

but everyone should feel comfortable posting questions here, right?  well, apparently some people don't.  something funny has happened.  we appear to have attracted some serious talent.  that's fine.  but we also have developed a sense of camaraderie, and that makes some new people hang back.  we all know what it's like.  you're the new guy, maybe at work, maybe a new club of some sort.  a bunch of guys are standing in a group, all laughing and having a good time.  unfriendly?  definitely not!  and if a new guy approaches, is he welcomed?  absolutely, yes!  but for many, a group like that is still difficult to approach.

so what to do?  well, here's my suggestion.  when someone posts a question, let's all make an effort to concentrate and stay focused on the new guy and the question that he has.  keep the side banter to a minimum and let's not get sidetracked.  if you think of a side issue, consider a separate post.  very few threads on any board stay focused on the original question once it get's past a half dozen responses.  to me, it's important that a guy can come in here and feel like he can get help he needs.  we were all "the new guy" at some point in our lives, and we've all had to turn to one person or another for help before.  i hope this will work for everybody!  rob, thank you.  and to everyone else, got a question?  post it on whatever board is close to your topic and you WILL get a response.  even if it's an "i dunno....".  we are all here to help.  alan
This is why I love this site! I joined awhile back and hung back, but not out of fear of not fitting in, I just wanted to watch and learn and could tell there were many great minds in here. After lurking for awhile, I realized not just the potential to learn things in here, but what a great community of people at many different levels of knowledge and know-how and how helpful everyone is. That's what got me to start commenting and asking questions and sharing in the game of life, or as I learned "Ohana". Thank you, to Alan, all the mods and anyone else that blesses these pages with knowledge and more importantly kindness!

Hi Alan and everyone else here, I've followed this site in the past for tips & tricks for my numerous Penn's but decided to join recently as a result of searching for more exotic versions of Tiburon Reel Kits and finding some of the cool stuff that Randy has sourced. As an introduction, I am admittedly a tackle junkie, especially when it comes to reels, not to mention tackle, lures and everything else. I have over a dozen or so Vintage Penn's and like so many here, have converted most with Newell and Tiburon components along with gear, drag and other upgrades. I also have a shipload of Abu Garcia Ambassadeur's, mostly the round ones in many configurations. I also have modern stuff, later Abu's, Shimano's, Daiwa's and Penn's too. I try not to be a collector as such, as I use most of these reels at one time or another. As far as fishing goes, for salt water my main deal is Calico Bass (iron & plastics) above all else but will settle for Sand Bass, yellowtail, bonito, 'cudas, lings and rock cod if all else fails. I enjoy surf fishing (Bass & Cabezon) and frequent local 3/4 day sport boats and love skiff fishing. For freshwater, my favorite species are Flathead Catfish followed by Largemouth Bass, smallmouth's too and anything else that'll bite. I didn't realize until recently how much more there is to this site than just reel repair, amazing!  Regards, Kirk

Newbie to the board and have already spent a few days reading.  Great site and from my perspective a whole lot of people that are in a different league than me when it comes to reel repair and modifications.  Hopefully one day I can contribute something of substance.  I am currently setting up my work-space and thought "Man this is going to be sight to behold", then I saw some of your guys work-spaces (Dream Crushers You Are).  I have quite a bit of the tools I need and just received Alan's bearing packer "Beautiful piece of craftsmanship".  I'm in Pensacola and do a significant amount of fishing, my reels get abused.  I figure in another 3-4 months I will have all the equipment needed to service most reels and as far as parts, that collection will come over time.  So that's me in a nutshell, a work in progress.

Welcome aboard, Diver!

It is important and crucial to remember — that we all start somewhere with our expression and skills.

To a guy with a TV tray and a few tools — to professionals making a living doing reel repairs and servicing for others — we need to hang onto the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction of doing something that few can or will attempt to do nowadays.

To some of the newer members —

If you come onto Alan's site knowing little about reel repair, restoration, upgrades, and servicing — seriously study the site for the areas that interest you every day for 90 days — work on a few various types of reels — really trying to understand the interaction of parts and materials — plus listen to others and ask questions — you will know more than 90% of typical reel repair folks, IMO.

This is THE site to go to — if one is serious about reel service and repairs.

No advertisements, no pop-ups, no profanity, no class distinctions.

Respect for others, as well as their knowledge, unselfish contributions, and questions...

It is "Ohana" — which means family, in Hawaiian.

Glad to have you on the site!

Best,

Fred

Thanks for accepting me into this group. I first learned reel repair back Tustin CA. 1984-88 just when two speed international reels started being sold, Cal Sheets would 2 speed Penn 50w. Saber split up Cal-star was started by Leon and Pat. The good old days! I'm hoping to learn more about two speeds, how low speed can be smooth and free, but high speed has resistance(pinion bearing?) I started  building custom rods 2010 down in SW. Florida with business license, part time after work at home. I've had several inquiries for reel repair.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Took your advise regarding the PENN 320LD Reels. We Ordered and replaced the Handle side bearings (Beneath the Drive Gear) with new as suggested and no positive results. When the Drag Lever is pushed to the strike position the spool is pulled to the lever side and jambs. Are we sure tis is not a spool problem?

Hello, I'm a new guy here.
Stumbled into this place while searching for information about an old reel that belonged to my Mother.
I thought everybody grew up fishing,... until I grew up.
Anyway, I'm glad to have found out what I needed and the reel is soon to be back in action. It's a Pfleuger Skilkast #1953.
