Can someone tell me about what size these reels are? Compared to a Penn 650,750ss? Trying to picture in my mind how big these are as I have never held one in my hand.
And I am assuming they are built on the inside like a 3000 only scaled up. Is this correct?
No. They are the same reel as the 3000 (old 300/400 med size) with RH/LH crank except they have a skirted spool. 9800 is UL, 9000 is medium, 9600 is large. 3800 is UL, 3000 is medium, no 3600.

Thanks again Tommy!
I've never fished one of these, or even handled one. I did fish a lot of Shimano reels made during this time frame and had no issues with the quality of manufacture, in fact in many ways I thought the Japanese Shimanos were smoother out of the box then the French Mitchel 300s, as much as I hate to admit it. How does the build quality of one of these compare to a late 80s/early 90s Shimano line. Its been to long to remember the nomenclature, but my favorite was a 4000 size with fightin drag and Quickfire II.
Thanks
Ron
Resurrecting this. I'm going to get a 9600 to finish my left hand saltwater Mitchel collection. I realize Mitchell has nothing to do with these, but they are a dirty little cousin. Has anyone ever opened one up? Are they similar to a Mitchell or is it cosmetic only? How about the quality of materials?
Thanks
