i just received a call from columbia, south america. luz morenfeld called. she is joel's wife and she says that joel is in intensive care and is not expected to survive the weekend. he is 80 and was actually hoping to make it on this year's spirit of adventure trip. he had been developing worsening dementia and now we know why. according to luz, his doctors had found a couple of tumors in his abdomen that were operable, and a pair of brain tumors that were not operable. the abdominal tumors were removed this last tuesday and he was recovering nicely during the week. yesterday, one of the brain tumors start hemorrhaging. these are in a spot that his doctors cannot reach. it does not look like he will make it through the week. if there is any more news, i will forward it along. :-[

So sad for you Luz, all the best of health for you in the future, very trying time for you, amazing how these tumors develop, and when they are in an un operable area around the brain, they must be very painful, cheers Don
So sorry. Dominick
Awww $^%#@...that's a total pisser.
Very sad news. I was looking forward to sharing some rail and some laughs with Joel again on the SoA.

I only had the funds for 1 trip this year and was leaning towards Cedros until Joel told me he was going to be on the 2021 SOA trip. That made the choice easy. He will be missed.
Horrible news. prayers sent.
What a shame, so sad
Thanks for letting us know Alan. Joel was my roomie on one of the SoA trips and he was great to fish with. Sad news indeed.
I just heard from the family. He passed away a couple of days ago. So sad.... :'(
RIP Joel
Rest In Peace Joel. You are missed. Was hoping to fish with you again in October. Man, this has been the worst 2 years ever!!!
So Sad, condolences to Luz family, cheers Don.
Rest in peace Joel.
Had been looking forward to more of that dark Colombian rum you brought onboard on past SOA charters. Will have to instead settle with Zaya today, and have one to your memory.
Joel, may you rest in peace. I feel better to have met you.
