Title: Naive about Newells. C220-5 vs S220-3.6 freespool question
Post by: Fishgolfman on March 21, 2022, 11:31:33 PM
The newells that i have acquired like p series or s series, when spun in free spool go for several seconds and handle dies not move. The C220-5 with the drag backed off when in free spool the handle moves somewhat making free spool for casting/ not so free! The C220 drag works as when backed off no tension but backed into reel tension. Is there something wrong with C220 or not work taking it apart..if it ain't broke don't fix

It should work the same as a P or S series. It also shouldn't be affected by the drag setting. If the handle moves in free spool try shimming the bearing on the handle side to move the spool over a little. The bummer with the C series is you have to pull everything off to get at the bearing
To fix the drag so it backs off all the way something has to come off between the handle nut and the spacer sleeve that sits on the main gear. A shorter spacer might be needed too. Try removing a wavey washer in that stack and see if that helps
