Title: Sorting Through Old Reels
Post by: foakes on November 03, 2014, 06:26:04 AM
Going through a bunch of old reels over the weekend -- and found a few neat old oddball spinners  (probably no one else likes them as much as I do -- but that's OK).  They are all mostly metal, ball bearing, and well made from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.

2 old Italian Alcedo Microns
A Italian Cargem 44M
Ocean City 350
Ocean City 300, 310, 320
Daiwa A-130RL
Daiwa GS-13S
Daiwa 100X
Zebco 6010
Abu Cardinal 653
Shakespeare 2210
Shakespeare 2240
Rogue 150

The old Rogue is kind of neat.  There is a finger lever up and behind the rotor that will put the spool into free-spool when pressed with your finger.

There were the usual other suspects like Mitchell, Dam Quick, Penn, Shimano, Ocean City, Pflueger, Johnson, Langley, Ryobi, lots of old baitcasters, fly reels, and around 400 just junk or parts reels.  About 1500 total.

Best,

Fred

Cool stuff there Fred, I don't think the Fishing Hall of Fame can hold a flame to the collection of vintage reels you have collected.

Looked up a little history on that old Rogue reel from the 60s --

John Shaw, independent reelmaker -- each assembled by hand -- high quality.

Up in Keta Country -- Grants Pass, Oregon.

By 1960 it was evident that those new fangled spinning reels were here to stay, and Shaw turned his attention to producing a fixed spool reel equal to the quality of his other Rogue Reel. The result was the Model 150 Rogue Spinning Reel, which came out in 1962.

The Rogue 150 was a high quality machine that incorporated the floating disk drag principal in a spinning reel. This drag was innovative, for it was not found in the spool, or on the rear of the reel. The drag adjustment was on the back of the cup, and it also incorporated a finger lever. The spinning reel drag lever worked the same as on the Model 200 single action reel - push the lever forward and you had a free spool; pull it back and you could increase the brake to full lockup.

This spinning reel was just as high quality as Shaw's other reels. The frame, spool, and external brake parts were cast from an aluminum alloy. The working parts were helical cut gears of steel, caged needle bearings on the gear shaft with other bearings of oil-ite bronze. The bail roller did that - it rolled rather than just being a hardened piece over which the line passed. The bail was made of stainless steel, and the bail trip spring was adjustable. You didn't need to back up the handle and slam it forward to make the bail trip with a Rogue reel. It always sprung to retrieve position easily.

This was a large spinning reel, made for the steelhead and salmon the Oregon. The spools  held 475 yards of 8 pound test monofilament, or 200 yards of 15 pound test monofilament. The spool only held the  line and had no other mechanical parts within. Extra spools were available. It was made in a left handed model as well as the standard right hand version.

The Model 150 Rogue Spinning Reel came out at a list price of $37.50, but by the 1980s it was selling (or not selling) for $87.50, including a simulated leather case. In the late 1990s John Shaw was still assembling spinning reels on demand, from parts on hand.

From gladiolus farmer to maker of the famous Rogue Reels, John Shaw led a very full life. He was eighty-eight years old when he died at his home in Grant Pass on May 13, 2001.

Fred, I'm sure 50 or so years from now your place will be a museum ;).
I've noticed in one of your pic that I can't find now, you have some white penn handle knobs and drag knobs for the smaller reels. Be careful how you keep those, they're impossible to find. Those are the most sought-after, especially the ones on the green 716.
Here is a pic of my 720, love these little reels:

Do you recognize the one in the back? It has your fingerprints all over it and that's what makes it more valuable. ;D

Found another old Pelican in really good condition yesterday, I didn't know I had -- so now I have two again.

See, it never hurts to share -- always comes back -- and helps everyone out.

Best,

Fred

Found enough Penn reels in need of work to justify getting them ready for the next Sportsman show or yard sale.

Last show in March, ended up selling around 64 that I had restored with new parts and greased drags.

This might yield around 30 or 40 with some I already have -- and adding the restores.

No expensive reels -- just mostly white bread...

Squidders, Jigmasters, small Senators, Longbeaches, levelwinds, and a few others.

Lot of fun to see them come back to life -- so that others can enjoy fishing them.

Best,

Fred

OK, Guys & Gals --

Here is the challenge --

Put all of the old junk Penn parts in 1 bin -- weighs 64 pounds.

How many reels does everyone think we can get out of these parts?

I will post pics when done -- and they will all be basically stock -- complete disassembly cleaning and servicing with Yamaha Marine Blue, Cal's drag grease, new CF drags, synthetic oil, and any missing parts replaced.

Might take a few weeks in between employment, reel jobs, and other life duties.

Best,

Fred

I am going to guess 50-65 complete reels.  I know you've got the handle arms, stands, spools, and guts just not sure how many matching sideplate sets you have.  That looks like fun!  Good Luck!

Since you've mentioned two weeks, my guess is 0. I've been watching how many parts you've been giving away, if you keep it up , in two weeks there might be nothing left in that bin. :-\ ;D

Ok I will also give my answer;
64lbs divided by 1.5lbs on avarage per reel = 42 - 25% = 31

my guess is 31 reels and 13lbs of leftover parts.

Is the winner the one who guess closest to the number of completed reels, or the number of completed reels without going over?  I am guessing he might find a few more needed penn reel parts in his other parts inventory (outside the pictured bin).  Final number of working reels produced overall is the number?
Title: Re: Sorting Through Old Reels
Post by: foakes on November 17, 2014, 11:38:16 PM
The winner will be the closest to the actual number of complete reels.

I may need to bring in a spool or two, maybe a couple of sideplates, or some rings, posts, etc.

Of course, they will all get new greased HT-100s.

However, it will be basically just what is in the bin -- plus a maybe a few parts to complete reels that are mostly 90% there -- just missing a piece or two.

The contest will be completed when it is impossible to make another complete working reel -- economically.

We will probably all be surprised.

One must be very careful and scrupulously honest when running a contest of this type -- given the high dollar prize involved.

That is why I have chosen an "impartial, serious, no-kidding ever" type of judge to serve as General Counsel in case of a close finish involving multiple contestants.

Prizes of this value, sometimes bring out the worst in good people.

Might even have to throw in a bonus reel or two -- just to ease the pain of losing for any close seconds.

😀😀😀😀

Best,

Fred

My actual/official guess is 45 complete reels.  I too utilized the Sal method, but employed a slightly more optimistic ratio of completed reels to left over parts (given the source), and a slightly smaller average reel weight.

OK -- Going to start on the Penn Reel rebuild today.

First prize for closest guess to actual is the specially modified Del Mar pictured above.

If anyone would like to add a guess for the number of completed reels -- or even to change your previous guess -- you can have until Sunday evening at midnight to do so, PST.  We will close the guesses after that.

Going to start on the Longbeaches first -- have (10) 60s, (3) 65s, and (1) 68 on the bench and ready to go.

The rest of the bunch is in or next to the bin still on the floor -- these include 49s, 149s,  Jigmasters, Squidders, Monofils, 3/0, 4/0, 6/0, 209, 109, 150, 155, 85, and some other odd ones.

Best,

Fred

Started the 14 Long Beaches at 2:45 -- stopped at 6:45 -- so far have two completed.

Every one has been stripped of line, completely disassembled, soaked in mineral spirits, ultrasonically cleaned with purple degreaser and simple green, all salt and contamination removed, all grease removed, rinsed and soaked in fresh water, dried and ready to put in new HT-100 drags, Shimano Marine grease, synthetic oil, and Cal's drag grease.

Will finish these up tomorrow, dinner is ready.

Best,

Fred

Reassembling the 14 Long Beaches --

Switching out spools, bushings, new drags, cleaning and smoothing the sleeves, bridges, yokes, inspecting  gears and changing out if necessary, grease & oil, just like jigsaw puzzles when you try to combine various parts to make a usable, smooth operating reel.

So far, so good.  A few parts missing, some rough operating spools and bushings, some stripped gears, eccentric springs bent -- just switching around parts as I go.

Best,

Fred

Looks like fun stuff to me. Surprising how fast you can go through these things.

I have 3 rods with grips all glued up and after I mowed the lawn today I just could not make myself start wrapping guides.  Guess I needed a day off.

Forgot to mention, there is...

A PRIZE FOR GUESSING NUMBER OF COMPLETED REELS!

In the event of multiple winners -- our in-house Legal Counsel, Dominick, Esq. --  will determine the recipient of this priceless piece of Penn history -- using established legal precedents, over 2500 years old -- in place since the Roman Empire.

Penn DelMar 285

Selling Grandpa's original antique Penn 285 DelMar fishing reel, custom power handle that matches side plate, adjustable reel stand, little stiff from being stored, probably needs oil, collector's item -- a must have for any serious Penn collector...Free Shipping included and insurance will be provided to protect this priceless investment.

Sounds good but there wasn't a Roman "Empire" 2500 years ago.

You are probably right, Mark --

Caesar Augustus declared himself Emperor  in 27 BC -- and that is typically when some think the Empire started.  However, Romulus declared himself King in 753 BC -- and founded Rome.

And then again, I'm not so sure this reel belonged to Grandpa, either!  😄😄😄 Thanks for clarification, Fred

Btw Fred, absolutely amazing work. I know I get bored of working on them after 2 or 3 reels. Your like a machine :o when you sit down to work on them...do you tear down two or three and clean the parts. Then reassemble? Or is it one at a time?? And if it's more than one at a time is all the same models? Just wondering.
Bob
Title: Re: Sorting Through Old Reels
Post by: foakes on December 01, 2014, 04:33:51 PM
Hi Bob --

Since time only allows me to work on these maybe one afternoon a week at this point -- I try to combine operations to be more efficient.

As an example, a reel can be completely disassembled, cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner in purple degreaser & Simple Green, mineral spirits if needed separately, fresh water rinsed, dried, polished, any parts needed ready for replacement -- then kept on one tray.  This process takes about 15 minutes total.

Generally takes another 20 minutes to install greased drags, reset spacer length by grinding a little off for more drag control, reassembling with Yamaha MG & synthetic oil, adjusting, testing drag, clicker, free-spool, all functions.

For me it is important to keep everything separate -- never mixing up more than one reel together.

However, many times I will strip 10 reels at a time -- keep them separated -- then do an assembly line cleaning operation prior to reassembly.

Many ways to approach the job -- just best to find out your comfort level -- and do it the same every time.

At the end of the day, each reel is special -- and needs to stand on its own -- and to function perfectly.

Probably won't get much of a chance to work on the next batch for about a week.

Best,

Fred

Plus going to work on completely restoring this tough old DAM Quick Super for a friend on this site.  It will get any new parts needed, new drags will be greased, set up for Heavy Salt & Surf.  These are very tough old war horses -- comparable to the Penn 704s, 700s, Mitchell 302s -- worm-drive, solid, simple -- metal spool, double reinforced bail.

Got the old D.A.M. Quick 270 Super completely cleaned, restored, upgraded, serviced, and ready to go for a member of this board.

This reel was introduced around 1954 -- and production continued for around 10 years, or so.  This particular one is from about 1960.

These are very durable surf reels -- they are set up and designed for salt water.

Metal spool, worm drive, very heavy bail system -- not beefed up, just over engineered for long-term durability and function.  Components are of superior quality and overbuilt.

Here it is ultrasonically cleaned and ready for assembly --

German vehicles? Yeah, I had a '82 Audi GT Coupe, never again.  I was always disappointed that it didn't have a turret rather than a sun roof. Crappy Bosch electrical system and bad CV joints. Drove great when it worked. I was always surprised when Motortrend picked it as the top sport sedan.

This reel will not be included in the final count for the guess the number of reels completed contest.

Because it was received in the mail just a couple of days ago.

However, wanted to share before cracking it open.

9/0 Senator -- needs cleaning, service, and a few key upgrades -- nothing too wild -- just basics.

Seems to operate very well -- no issues -- good bones to work with.

I have long maintained -- a properly set up 9/0 or 6/0 with an aluminum frame, greased CF & SS stack, good under gear washer, and properly serviced -- will successfully land most anything in the Ocean, that is catchable.

Weak spot on these 9/0s -- has always been the potential for frame twist and torque.  This frame will eliminate that.

Then we may look at a SS gear set, SS sleeve, better handle -- although these stock handles are great.

Keeping this for myself -- as one of our members actually found it buried in his garage -- and did not know he had it.  Can you believe that!

Thanks, Daron!

Best,

Fred

The contest to win the custom DelMar -- is coming to a close!

Restoring these old Penns from spare parts has been fun -- and the finish line is in sight.

So far have 51 reels completely restored.

Looks like around 9 or 10 to go -- then I will just part out the rest -- clean the parts -- and throw them in the category bins for future repairs.

Then the reels will be ready to sell at the Sportsman Show near the end of this month.

When you show folks a reel like a Jigmaster or Long Beach -- they ask how much -- I reply $40 -- sometimes they think that is too much.  After all, they can buy a yard sale reel for $25.

Even when I 'splain that each reel has been completely disassembled, cleaned, any parts needed replaced with new, new CF drags, Cal's greased, adjusted and ready for the Salt -- they still hesitate.  (Many don't, but a few do).

So I think this year, I will price the reels like a Jigmaster, at $15 -- plus the complete service, and the new drags.  That would be around $15 + $20 + $9 = $44.

Basically, they are getting a reel for just close to the cost of the service & parts.  They either understand -- or they don't -- doesn't really make any difference to me.  I don't need to sell them -- but I would like to get them into the hands of people who would enjoy fishing these classics that are set up right.

Financially, it makes no business sense for me to spend this much time on these old soldiers -- I guess I just enjoy showing them the respect they deserve.

And it keeps my skills sharp -- trying to do these quickly, but fully and perfectly functional -- and really learning about the similarities and differences in these old Penns.  With the new drags, upgraded grease, and set up for salt -- they are actually better functioning than new.

I may need a plinth to go along with that prize DelMar -- Daron, the Plinthmeister, extraordinaire?

Best,

Fred

Amazing work Fred.  Interesting that your origional comment about the reels in the bins with a starting weight of 61lbs should be about 90% complete.  After completing the 51 reels, weight went up by about 8%.  Also, our estimates of weight/reel and parts remaining were typically less then what the actual turned out to be.  This tells me..
-This is not your first rodeo
-We all underestimated what could be done with that 61lb pile of old incomplete reels

So, if your at 51 completed reels now doesn't that mean that we have a winner?  Since Mr. BMitch put in the largest estimate of 51.  I guess the contest is not offically over until all of the reels have been completed, and the officials have reviewed all available data, and come to a unanimous decision.

Great job!

Any idea on the total time invested in this project?  I.e. #hrs/reel average..maybe around 60-80hrs total?

Fred,
2 questions:
1. Saw your work on the D.A.M Quick 270 Super. Are all "Super" 270's or is "Super applied to other sizes?
2. Are you going to offer the reels here before your "yard sale" at the Sportsman's show?
Title: Re: Sorting Through Old Reels
Post by: foakes on March 19, 2015, 11:21:12 PM
John --

Do not know on the time -- 60 to 80 may be about right -- but over a period off and on for a few months.

This did not include the thinking time in between -- for example, spent 3 hours on one reel -- trying to get the spool to run smooth on a 145.

Left it alone, came back a few days later -- found a narrow spool, 49 stand, and some old narrow used Newell bars.  Within 7 minutes, it was apart and back together -- running perfectly, and increasing the value.

We will wait until done to complete the contest.  Don't want to stumble at the last minute.  Pride cometh before a fall.  Main thing for me, is to get completed what I started.

As to the weight -- estimates can be off, since there were a few bags of loose reel parts off to the side -- other parts had to be fished out of the bins, such as sideplates, rings, stands, etc.  When the reels are complete, they weigh a little more.

And I have 2 scales -- one for buying, and one for selling -- might have gotten them mixed up.

When I send out the reel, the winner will also get another complete reel to use as they see fit.

Best,

Fred

Bill --

The D.A.M. Quick Supers came in (3) models -- and yes, they were all the same size.

Super is only applied to these reels -- not any others in the Quick lineup.

This is a large, very heavy duty spinning reel designed for salt water.  Simple, basic, over-engineered components.  These are great for casting or surf fishing.

The models were the basic 270, the 270 with a built in line counter, and a 275.  The 275 is fairly rare because it is a true 2-Speed reel with oversize bronze and steel gears.

These reels are fairly cheap, since few reel mechanics have the parts or experience to restore them.  And they do not look "modern".

Yes, anyone who is a member of this site would have first crack at any of the reels they might want -- prior to the show.  The loyalty has to be here first.

Best,

Fred

Thanks Fred,
I may pick one up (both the "Super" and one of yours). I remember there was a good albacore bite in 1961 or 62. I'd done pretty well and a friend and his dad, neither of whom fished, wanted to go with me. The dad went out and bought 2 new Supers and 2 heavy rods. I remember standing next to them as all of use hooked up at the same time. My Squidder worked fine. Both of them snapped their line in about 5 seconds. Took them most of the day to loosen up the drag. Like most SoCal fisherman that just confirmed my bias against spinners! Now, however, I think I'd like to revisit the idea and since I like old stuff, may give it a try.

You've put too much time into those, charge what's right , I believe you're too low. I didn't really see everything that you have, but I did notice a couple on top that would generate $100+. That 146 with the acuurate frame usually goes for $125 and so does that green 9.
If you want to just give them away, because that is what you are doing, that would be up to you, I'm sure someone would appreciate them, I hope.

66 1/4 pounds...

Congratulations to BMitch!

Mitch is the official winner of the "Guess the Number of Penn Reels to be completed out of Spare Parts, old reels, and loose pieces".

55 are done -- and I could conceivably build another 5-8.

However, I am running out of time before the show tomorrow -- due to early Spring here in California, and lots of reels that I have been servicing.  This was just kind of an in-between fun job to break up the daily mix -- and to get some Penns ready to sell out of the loose ends.

So I will likely build out the others if I get a chance -- then just part out the rest, clean the parts -- and put them back in the bins for future repairs.  Can always use the parts.

Every reel has been completely disassembled, or put together from loose parts -- cleaned ultrasonically, CF with Cal's, Shimano Marine grease, syn oil, any broken or missing parts replaced with mostly new ones, adjusted for all functions, ready to fish.

This was a lot of fun and a bit of a challenge for me -- but it allowed me to see how other parts would interchange to make a solid reel that I would want to fish with.

I thought I knew a lot about these -- but I added quite a bit of knowledge about screws, gears, and easy systems for assembling quickly.  All useful.

It also allowed me to do the reels without using any schematics -- keeps one sharp.

I will have a little surprise for Mitch to go with the "plinthed DelMar".

Best,

Fred

Your incredible doing all those reels this fast. It just took me 8 days to finish a "99" size 500. The Wife keeps me busy with Momma Do things.

Up at 3:30 Saturday morning -- to attend the Sportsman Show in Fresno, as a Vendor --

Got to the gate at 5:10 -- they opened it up at 5:30 --

Got set up -- open to the public from 8 to 3 --

Very poor public turnout -- and less Vendors than usual --

Had over 200 reels which included Mitchell, Quick, Daiwa, Shimano, as well as 55 freshly completed Penns.

Only sold (1) 209 Penn -- 8 DAM Quicks -- (5) Mitchells -- (1) Shimano -- 8 Fenwick Rods --

However, I was very thankful to have done that much -- many Vendors sold little or nothing -- a few did OK -- and most packed up and left around 12:00 noon.

I did pack up early at 1:00 -- then went out looking for some bargains myself.

Spent $45 on a Penn 150 Surfmaster, a Jigmaster 500, (2) old Seagates, a Shimano AXULS tiny spinner, a Shakes Quantum XL0052 tiny spinner, and a very nice Shimano ultra light spinner, model MLX100 Quickfire in metal with ball bearings -- weighing 6.1 oz...They may look a little rough -- but will turn out well -- even the old Seagates have a good long free spool and no noises...

Also bought a new old Harnell 9' 2-piece fly rod -- with the old original cardboard tube and original sock.  Appears pristine and unused -- black with red, cork.  Paid $40 -- no idea on value -- might be what I paid more or less -- just know they are a high quality Rod -- and beautiful.  Put it together today -- fantastic action.

So, got some bargains which I will completely overhaul -- over the next few days and post a couple of pics --

Other positives were a good number of folks who want their gear serviced and repaired -- handed out quite a few cards.

Also, if anyone has any of the older original Penns -- and would like to trade one for one of the Seagates, after I overhaul it -- let me know.  I have a Seaford and a Seagate now -- just looking to make a display of the early years.

Best,

Fred

As most of you know -- Bob -- BMitch, won the "Guess the Number of Penn Reels made out of Old Parts Contest".

As the winner, he will receive this Custom DelMar.

The Plinth was graciously made and donated by Daron.

Bob claims he is going to display it prominently in the entry to his home (Bob, you do not have to).

And he will also receive a nice old Penn 60 that I completely went through.

Thanks for being a good sport, Bob!

Best,

Fred

Here are the completed 55 reels, not counting the "60" going to Bob.

Fred,Daron and all here who contributed to this fun/educational experience. Thanks so much!! Fred you are a true gentlemen. You make the reel work look easy. Daron, I love the idea of having a plinth that you fashioned. This gift is appreciated more than you folks know. YES! It will be displayed prominently in the front foyer in my home. This way when anyone comes to visit they will know that are in the presence of "reel madness". You guys are the best!! I hope to one day return the kindness. With deepest gratitude. To all involved!!

Actually, Bob is the true gentleman.

Can you believe he attempted to turn down this wonderful prized reel -- coming up with some lame excuse that it would be more fair going to someone else?

We would not let him off the hook that easily.

A deal is a deal.  A reel is a reel.

Thanks to everyone who enjoyed this little fun project.

Best,

Fred

Finally, after all of the finding, going through boxes, cleaning, organizing, and trying to get all of the Penn stuff organized -- here is the result so far -- after working yesterday afternoon to finish sorting and stowing everything in an accessible order that makes sense, at least to me.

About 2/3 new -- 1/3 cleaned and recycled.

For now, this project is completed -- and I am sorry to bore you with all of this -- but just wanted to share the last bit...

Best,

Fred

I have about 30 or 40 Delrins -- and go through about 20 a month.

Many times I just put a Cal's greased smaller CF under the gear.

They both work well -- although the Delrin is my favorite -- because it works better -- but if I did every upgrade on clients reels -- no one could afford the bill.

So I use Delrin most times -- but for a $20 complete service & a new drag stack, UG washer + some change out parts at no charge -- it still is $30.

I am slowly moving over to Delrin -- but still like the greased CF UG nearly as well.

And I have a lot of washers to use up first.

So it depends on the client, their expectations, and how they will likely treat the reel.

Best,

Fred

Best,

Fred

My first reel was a spining reel my dad got at work as a present that he re-gifted to me. round main gear housing compact body.

Not sure what ever happened to it. At some point as a teen I bought an Ambassador 6000C for my self I owned for at least 25 years, but I lost it out of a boat fishing the back waters of the Chassahwitzka river for snook. I loved that reel, but never got another.

Do you know which reel it was, AA?

Sounds a little like a Mitchell 304.

What size, and what color?

Fred

I think it was brown Fred, don't think it was a Mitchell, totally round reel body maybe Phluger?

I looked up some 50's reels it was a Luxor, I saw a picture that looked just like it.

Some of the French reels had round bodies.

If you can narrow it down -- let me know, and we might get lucky with one I have that I could just send you.

Most of the round bodies were 50s and very early 60s.

Got one of those Rogue 150's. A solid Reel through and through. Surprised nobody else tried to copy or imitate the unique finger control drag system. Mine's a lefty.

I think I have (3) Larry —

2 Italian, and one Made in Japan.

Think the badges are missing on one or two — never broke them open.  Just been sitting in the bins for a few decades.

All operate properly — so they likely each need a thorough cleaning and service.

I also have a couple of the unusual drag knobs for these in the loose drag nut bins.

You are welcome to those also.

These are not the reels that I work on at this point in my life — so they are for sale if someone wants them.

Best, Fred

I know this is an old post, but this year I made it my mission to acquire all the same model reels we used during our childhood. Some reels are ones my dad used, some my uncles used, some reels I used. It was a real eye opener when I found that most of the reels we had back then I could buy off eBay for very little cash outlay. Almost all of the ones I reacquired were less than $20, some less than $10. I acquired a Johnson Century 100A, Pflueger Akron, Shakespeare Marhoff, Shakespeare Summit, Shakespeare 1766 II, Shakespeare 1755 Wonderspin, and an assortment of rods over fify years old. It was a lot of fun finding them. It was even more fun fishing with them. I posted a video of me fishing with some of my vintage rods and reels on YouTube. See it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv_di5PnH7Y

Costco has 'em now, for $300+. Was tempted, but I just don't know all the ins n' outs about owning one.

Great video ddselvig. Where's that lake/pond? Looks pretty productive. Lemme guess, Northern Mid-West?

Got a couple of Shakes. Wonder—spincasters(one's a "Wondercast", 1797, late 50's and one's an early 50's "Wondereel", 1745). Beaters both of 'em, just wanted to look, test and see if they are as well made as they look. Yes! Very little plastic and alota weight. The 1797 has an ossilating spool and a nice drag system. The 1745 has no A/R, and releases line by a backward 1/4 crank on the handle. Very sturdy reels, so of course I'm looking for a good boxed one with a manual and tool. One model(1798 or 1799?) has a star drag + the typical micro drag(twist the cover cap flanges down onto the spool, and the levelwind feature. Like to find one-a those with the box...

I am new to the site and want to post a question but cannot figure out how so I am using what i think is a "reply" area.  I have gotten more than smitten with Dam Quick reels.  I am amassing quite a number for parts and repair.  I just cane across what I think is a Super 270.  The unique thing about this particular reel is that the anti reversed not catch - just clicked in all positions.  When I took it apart, there was nothing holding the drive axle in place - no clip or?  Upon investigating the drive axle could slide either way in the "bearing cover."  In looking at schematics, it seemed as if it should have a stop so it could not go into the cover.  What it had is a "brass" sleeve that goes over the drive axle.  There is no apparent place for an E clip.  Does this reel consist of mixed pieces or another submodel or ?
