Very nice.  That was recently featured in a tv program saying that it's one of the places one should go before they kick the bucket.  Very nice.  Respect the native indians as it's a very sacred place.

Post by: Bryan Young on June 26, 2012, 05:31:17 PM
Wow, not that's a lightning shot.  Only saw one lightning strike close up when we were surf fishing in Hawaii.  Started to pour, then all the surfers came in.  Not 5 minutes later, lightning strike bouncing on the water.  Very cool, but scary.  I didn't understand why my fishing rods didn't get hit since there were 13 feet up in the air, wet, tracking to ground, but was sure scary trying to get our gear in for us to leave.
Title: Re: THE CREW
Post by: seaeagle2 on June 27, 2012, 01:04:13 AM
That shot made the air on my hair stand up.  When I was in high school, worked on a state fire crew in Washington state.  I was 400 yards from two guys on my crew that were hit by lightning.  Other than the fact they got hit by lightning, they were very lucky. One of the other firecrews had an emt and he was able to perform cpr on the one guy til his heart started back up.  There were 2 helicopters patrolling within 5 minutes of us.  There was a logging "landing" large enough for either chopper to land except it was full of trucks.  The fireboss said" you got 2 minutes to get all the trucks cleared, any left just use the cat to get em out of the way".  One of the trucks was a Peterbuilt truck cab with a 3000 gallon water tank, the guy that moved that truck hopped down from the cab and said, "How the heck did I do that, I've never driven anything bigger than a pickup.  Anyways, the guys were airlifted to a hospital about 10 minutes by air away, and both were back at work with in a week or so.

QuoteI didn't understand why my fishing rods didn't get hit since there were 13 feet up in the air...
I know what you mean Bryan.
I was surfing in Sydney around 2000 when the usual summer afternoon thunderheads built up and unleashed a few dozen strikes.
One hit the water less than 100m from us, causing an audible crack and fizz, along with a lot of misted water.
I've no idea why we weren't hit, given we were sitting on our boards and a good three feet higher than anything in the vicinity.
Great experience though.
Cheers, Justin

Around here, those guys take over the marina's, poop all over the boats, raid the bait coolers, (they figure out how to open them), and make a general mess of you boat it you leave anything that even remotely smells like there's food in it, but they look cute.

I believe we  need a recipe section. Alan/Bryan?
Title: Re: THE CLEANING STATION
Post by: LTM on June 29, 2012, 08:21:59 PM
WE DEFINITELY NEED A RECIPE SECTION  :D.

We've all heard the saying: one man's bitter is another man's sweet.  Just knowing how to prepare fish makes "junk" fish a real "treat".  I ran into two guys from Thiland/Vietnam who worked at a family restauraunt that told me they had a great recipe for Bonito; and all I had ever heard was "they dont taste good".
Ive heard the same for Barracuda, and another guy decades ago turned me on to preperation and cooking recipe and when I got back home I fired up both grills in the condos where I lived at the time and fed all 20 units.  Everyone was asking what kind of fish is it this time Leo; this tastes terrific.  When I told them it was Barracuda, they all said that they never heard that barracuda was good to eat. Long story short; I only ate a little pinch to sample and everyone else in my condo complex was grubbing-down and cooking all the extras and we all ate great meals (except me, no barracuda).

If you want my Barracuda recipe then we need a recipe section.  STAY TUNED  ::)

FIRST OFF I'M A TERRIBLE RIGHTER AND IF IT WASN'T FOR SPELL CHECK I WOULD BE IN DEEP POP.
I GOT AN EMAIL CONCERNED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF STRIPERS  CAUGHT.  POWELL IS A DIFFERENT LAKE THAN ANY PLACE. STRIPERS REPRODUCE IN POWELL IN THE MILLIONS. WAYNE, THE FISH BIOLOGIST SAYS TO KEEP EVERY FISH YOU CATCH TO HELP THE LAKE OUT.  TO FIND OUT ABOUT LAKE POWELL, GO TO WAYNESWORDS.COM AND ENJOY.
I WOULD LIKE TO SOME OF YOUR CATCHES AND PLACES THAT YOU FISH.

HAVE A GOOD DAY

i have had filled ice chests full of fish on rare days.  there are a couple of "guidelines" that pretty much everyone adhere's to anyway, so here goes.....

- the catch has to be taken legally according to the local rules and regulations.  no posting of illegal catches, unless it is subsequent to an arrest.

- the catch can not be wasted.  if you are going to take a legal limit of fish and then throw it in a dumpster, i do not want to hear about it.

- if the catch is taken legally, properly handled, and then served up for dinner (sooner or later), then i do not believe that criticism is in order.

on a good rock cod day, we can land 10 rockfish each.  five of us can legally take 50 rockfish.  these fish are iced, scaled, gutted, gilled and put back on ice and then shared among friends and neighbors.  the are given to people that we know appreciate fresh rockfish and will savor every bite.  easily 20 families get to partake.  i do not believe that any of these are ever even frozen.  i think everyone here is consciencious and responsible.  just remember that the standards for a community can vary, country to country, even state to state.

I cut and pasted this from the Utah regs, looks like he's in the clear, I don't see an endangered fish in that cooler.  That might be the picture that gets my wife to hit Lake Powell for stripers (we did stripers on the Sacramento years ago)

STRIPERS NO LIMIT

Keep all stripers caught, especially the small ones to keep the population in balance with the forage base. Immediately put stripers on ice in a cooler and fillet them as soon as possible for excellent eating. The best method of keeping striped bass for the freezer is to vacuum seal fillets before freezing.

ENDANGERED FISH: RELEASE IMMEDIATELY, POSSESSION NOT ALLOWED.

Colorado pikeminnow (Squawfish), razorback sucker, humpback chub, bonytail chub, flannelmouth sucker.

Congratulations holeinthwater for a super catch.

Those fish are good size and wonderful for the dinner table.  Btw, how do you folks cook them? Fried fillets, oven baked, or steamed?

Oh, and that picture of the sun ray coming down from the clouds....awesome.  Looks like you would find that in a religious bookstore with some words of wisdom scribed in the backgroud.  :)

I was the one who questioned the amount of stripers and small ones' at that. I didn't wanna make a big stink so I PM'ed Dave.  Thanks for clearing that up, and glad you had a good day on the water.  If you guys ever read any books on the bass massacres in the 70's and 80's that lead to the 90's moritorium... pretty sad story.  Seeing that cooler with so many shorts reminded me of those days when I caught 1 striper over a 3 year period  :'(
It makes sense due to the lack of draggers, clammers, scallop boats, etc. running through Lake Powell  >:(
Now I know where all the short stripers in Chinatown come from ;)
Tight lines,
Dom

Southern Calif is split on the striper limit..

Kern County and north its 2 over 18"...
Down south of Kern Co its 10 Stripers no size limit...
They overtake our lakes and the Bass & other fishing suffers.  Many are trying to get the Limit raised "no limit" or at least 20+..
They are very good eating (from what Iam told).
So with a Larger limit the population would be kept in check??? and the LMBass anglers would be much happier!!

I am one of those Bass (LMB) anglers.   I say take all you want......
they breed like cockroaches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was in the SF bay area I cooked my stripers this way.

filet the fish, remove the dark stipe on meat
Place corn meal and some McCormick season all in a brown paper bag, drop in fish, shake, drop into hot oil and remove when light brown.  We would catch some in the evening at Alameda Naval Air and fix them for lunch.

also reminds me of a funny story, when I married my wife she said, "you catch it and I'll clean it and cook it"  Well that sounded good to me.  The first time I came home and put a 20# striper in the sink she said, "get that thing out of my kitchen, it stinks", it was only cought 1 hr. earlier in the evening.  It's ok, we are no longer together....Lynn

Quotecall that a hole in the wall?
;) ;D

Great shot mate.
Auckland is honeycombed with lava tubes and, from time to time, a back garden will collapse into a big (formerly unknown) underground cavity.
The local water board has run significant parts of Auckland's water infrastructure through lava tubes and even turned some of the larger cavities into reservoirs.
There's long been stories of tubes that run beneath our Waitemata Harbour, that Maori used to get to and from the North Shore.
A hundred-odd years ago, a local tribe at Mount Albert even had to flee through a lava tube as another tribe overran their 'Pa' or fort.
Keep 'em coming HitW.
Cheers, Justin

Nice trophy room:)

Last fall caribou, solo hunt. Hopefully I'll pick up a griz and some wolf this winter and maybe get the trap line out this year. Really depends on snow fall this year. We had about 460 inches in town this past winter and over 600 inches where I go for fur bearers. Plus it was a little windy, we hit 152mph gusts and over 100mph sustained so it was a struggle just to convince myself to open the front door, lol.

Title: BACK TO WORK
Post by: HOLEINTHEWATER on September 10, 2012, 11:31:27 AM
Got to Neskai Tuesday 2pm wind blowing faster than we were  going 20 MPA. Got camp set up in a sand storm. Wind died down around 4pm.
Went fishing in the upper bay across from camp. caught around 30 fish on top water and sweet beavers. Wednesday morning went back across the bay a caught another 60 plus on top water and sweet beavers and grubs. Wind came up went back to camp. That afternoon went back out only caught around 20 fish the last 30 min. before dark on top water. James want to go to Zahn the next day. We usually catch bigger fish up there, not the quantity. Up at first light and head to Zahn. Fished until 10 am only caught 8 fish. Bay was muddy and junk floating all over it. Headed back down the lake wind blowing like crazy. Set in camp until about 4pm, wind still blowing, decided to go over to Neskahi wash and get some protection from the wind. Started out with sweet beavers and grubs, started catching right away off the point that  comes into the Neskahi cove but couldn't keep the toon into position, wind. Headed down the cove, just before you get into the canyon shallow water. started throwing top water and the bite was on. Had no idea what you would catch, large mouth, small mouth or striper. Fished until just before dark and they were still going. cleaned around 60 fish that night. Headed back over the next morning. we threw nothing but top water the rest of the morning. We caught over a hundred fish that morning. The backs of the coves were packed with shad.
Wind came up had to go back to camp. Went back that afternoon and only caught around 40 plus. Friday was slower had to use grubs and cranks but still caught a bunch of fish. Fished Saturday morning for a couple hours and caught around 30 fish,. picked up camp and headed home. We drove 163 miles up and back on the lake. ANOTHER GREAT TRIP.

DAVE.

Great project shots of the beast. The guy/friend who introduced me to fishing along time ago; he and I built his first two skiffs together. The first being a 40's eara hull and the later being a beautiful Parker hull. Your photo's brought back fond memories (even the birth of my friends first son).

You two know every inch and electrical connection on that craft. Good fishing

TOOK COUPLE DAYS OFF WORK. I'M ONLY ON MY COMPUTER WHEN AT WORK. THE WIFE ONLY HAS DIAL UP AND I REFUSE TO USE IT. WENT FISHING AT ONE OF OUR LOCAL LAKES(BARTLETT) FRIDAY.  AFTER A NASTY STORM ROLLED THREW THURSDAY NIGHT. I TOOK A NASTY FALL GETTING INTO MY PARTNERS BOAT IN THE MORNING. PULLED MY GROIN MUSSEL. IT IS BLACK AND BLUE AND HURTS.  WE STILL FISHED UNTIL THE AFTERNOON. WE ENDED UP WITH 17 LARGE MOUTH BASS. THE LARGEST WAS ONLY AROUND 2LBS.

Nice Dave.
Looks like a Browning Citori Lightning, same as the one I used. I was a club member and went weekly, haven't done it for a long time. I'm not sure my messed up shoulder could take it anymore. You probably know Doves are not easy to hit, I didn't miss many during my time, my field gun was a Franchi 500, with a 26" barrel.
Take care, Sal

Sal, if she is taking her shoes off and walking barefooted in Az desert, I imagine her feet are quite calloused and rough to the touch- I dont think she would be a good candidate for marriage at all.

Also, I bet that buck did not taste great.  I would have to make jerky out of the whole thing.

Beautiful picture, Dave. My wife has the same angel on the tree top.  Sal

Sal, AT Members, there is a story of Angels on the top of Christmas trees and it goes like this...

When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drunk all the cider and hidden the liquor.. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

Just then, the doorbell rang, and an irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to put it?'

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree...Not a lot of people know this.   Dominick

Good morning, Dave....nice picture.
Since it is a morning shot, I take it it's from the east.

Proverbs of our ancestors that usually never fail:
"Alba rossa chiama pioggia" ( Red dawn called rain )....rhymes in italian :)

I never venture out when  dawn is that beautiful, the other way around if it's at sunset.

Something about old Fords and old Penns..... ;D

had one of these as a teenager.  it was a '54 ford, just 2 years older than me!  had a little 4 banger engine.  the battery box was located in the floorboard on the passengers side and could be accessed from a built in hatch.  you could put a small ice chest in place of the battery and then cover the hatch with carpet.  never did that, of course, but thought about it!   ;D

Classic, I had a 48 ford bonus with a 302 cleveland and holden front end in it. When I first got it it had huge rear tires which were fun in the dry but it handled like a dog on wet lino in the wet.Had to get some saner tires after an incident that made me nearly wish I had worn brown trousers. Good times, thanks for the pic.

Btw that wasn't a misprint, the Cleveland dies ended up with Ford Australia and they destroked the 351 to 302 so they wouldn't have to import the Windsor anymore. The Windsor was a better motor though, I think Ford Australia made the last Clevelands for De Tomaso in the mid 80s.

de tomaso?  you mean as in the de tomaso pantera?
Title: Re: COOL FORD
Post by: raumati01 on February 05, 2013, 06:34:08 AM
Yep that De Tomaso, they used the four bolt main 4v heads and I think they had a four weber set up which must have been a nightmare to tune. I've only ever seen one, I heard they had huge rust issues that lead to a recall in the 70s.

WE USUALLY DON'T GO UNTIL MAY ON OUR FIRST TRIP. I LIKE  JULY THREW OCTOBER BECAUSE YOU CAN GET INTO THE STRIPER BOILS. YOU HAVE TO BRING YOUR OWN SHADE IT CAN BE BRUTAL OUT IN THE SUN ALL DAY.  FOR ALL THE INFORMATION ON LAKE POWELL GO TO WAYNESWORDS.COM. WAYNE IS THE FISH BIOLLIGEST FOR POWELL. ONE THING THAT IS IMPORTANT, IS YOU HAVE TO USE FLOROCARBON LINE.

I always love yiur pics! I had to pick an osprey off a runway a few years back. He had decided to eat his mullet on the runway and was hit by a GA plane landing. The prop took off his wing. He was alive but didn't last long.  :( They are beautiful birds.
