Hey folks,

I have a Pro Gear 255 I've fished for years and worn down the teeth of the main gear. I picked up a Penn 5-500 gear thinking it would fit, but the size is off and stops the eccentric jack from fully disengaging. What's the part number for the gear I should be looking for? And should I upgrade to a stainless pinion if I'm sticking with a brass gear?

Thanks

The main and pinion wear together, usually best to change both.  I'd think that gear should fit ok, that's strange.
Do what you can with that you have where you are

welcome!  the jigmaster 500 main and pinion should work fine.  go with those!

I have a 255 with stainless main and pinion gears. The yoke and jack are also stainless. Did they come this way?

After some use, I just got around to taking the 255 apart for cleaning. I'm guessing my gear is steel since a magnet sticks to it. I had thought it was stainless because it is so clean.

my understanding is that 440 stainless is harder, has more iron, and is magnetic.  not sure what the maim gear is made of, though.

Yeah, I've been trying to see if any Penn steel gears are the same.

the penn jigmaster gears should work.

Those gears are either Accurate or Newell gears. Pro Gear reels didn't come with stainless steel gears. They are likely heat treated gears.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

The 255/251 have 5:1 gears. The standard Jigmaster gears are 4:1. Newell 200/300 gears are 5:1 as those of the Penn 505/506.
