Title: 8/24/2013 - the 2013 second annual garcia-ouano charter
Post by: alantani on September 03, 2013, 04:48:55 AM
august 2013 - the second annual garcia-ouano charter

photo credits - allen, me, ben, pedro, brandon, nik, roger and tim!

checklist - laundry, bills, haircut, answer all e-mails, pm's and posts, change the oil in the cars, wash all the cars, and THEN start prepping for the trip.  my wife is wondering why in the world i would worry about doing bills before i leave when i could just as easily do them when i come back.  i'm not going to tell her this, some guys from the bay area went on a fishing trip a few years ago and they didn't come back.  i dunno, just call it superstitious.

****************************************************************************

thursday, 8/22/13 - packing for the trip did not start until 18 hours before we were supposed to leave, scraping spools of line, jigs and reels off the garage floor.  what a mess!  things just got tossed into bags and bins.  they would have to get sorted out on the boat.  no sleep tonight.

friday, 8/23/13 - good thing i had roger with me again to do all the driving.  it took some doing to get a hall pass from his wife, but he pulled it off.  with a new baby at home, i'm guessing he had to be extra good!  we are traveling with four ice chests, 20 rods and reels, milk crates and duffle bags.

we hit a little saturday traffic in los angeles, then sailed straight through to san diego.  the first stop was charkbait!

second stop was squidco.  nik pandza from squidco will be joining us on this trip.

the third stop was the vagabond hotel to dump off our gear, and then a short walk over to the mexican place for dinner.  one margarita and i was done for the night.

saturday, 8/24/13 - roger and i grabbed a quick breakfast at dennys, then pulled the truck over to fisherman's landing to unload our gear.

loading our gear on the royal star was quick and easy.  the "red shirts" on the dock do all the heavy lifting from the dock to the boat, and royal star deckhands help as well.  you could almost sit back watch the entire process, but no one does.

roger won a rod from okuma.

i won a megabait!  i love these things, and you will see why later.

ok, enough goofing off.  remember that i said 20 rods and reels?  roger put all of these together while i tied on the topshots.

up first are my old progear classic series 501's with the calstar grafighter rods.  the progears are still my favorite star drag reel.  they are rigged with 50# spectra and a 40# topshot.

next came the makaira 8 II's with the phenix hybrids 838's.  50# jerry brown hollowcore and a 40# topshot.

third up are the andros 5 two speeds on the plain 7 foot phenix black diamond rods.  50# jerry brown and a 40# topshot.

fourth up, the makaira 10's with the 7 foot phenix hybrids.  60# jerry brown and a 50# topshot.

then, the penn's - the torque 25 narrow two speed on a penn jigstick, the international 12 vsx on a calstar westcoaster, and the international 50 vsx on a calstar westcoaster.

and lastly, the makaira 50 on an old school calstar!  i still love these old fiberglass rods.  both my makaira 50 and my penn 50 will see little action on this trip, but they should get a workout on the maximus out of puerta vallarta in march of next year!

why so many 40# outfits?  i thought we were going to have guys on the boat that would not have their own gear.

the starboard side of the boat had just as much gear.  meet matt lytle in the distance, his father mark lytle of lytle screen printing in huntington beach, and roger.  mark's shop made up much of the gear you will see on this trip.

so remember, a pound a week is what you will gain on this trip.  soup, a main course of seared bluefin, and dessert.

deckhand nestor parada works mostly in the galley.  fresh apple pie is what's up for dessert.

a few last minute items and we are ready for tomorrow.

tuesday, 8/27/13 - breakfast at 5:30am, french toast, sausages, juice.

we ran all night from the bluefin grounds into natividad and cedros islands inshore.  the rain was gone and we were finally back to normal, albiet cooler, weather.  this was not going to be the cold rainy combat fishing like the previous two days.

the action was steady, with some quality fish coming over the rail.  not alot of sense of urgency, either.  all of us had plenty of fish from the first two days of hard fishing, so many of us took some time to relax.

wednesday, 8/28/13 - breakfast, 5:30am, eggs benedict!

we would spend today poking around cedros.  it was a mix of yellowtail, calicos and barracuda.   we kept the yellowtail and release all but a few of the others.  it's a big production to move because the anchor has to go up and down everytime.

our mid-morning snack was yogurt, cottage cheese and sprinkles.  when my wife asks about the food, this is the photo i show her.

it was fun getting to see the island again.  i never get tired of this place.

now, i'm not normally a big fan of barracuda, but our chef, drew, made some fish tacos and burritos with barracuda.  it was absolutely amazing.

now for the fun part.  we had been hitting calicos left and right using bait.  i decided to just go for those.  i got my lightest rig, the progear and the grafighter, and rigged up a megabait.  we were anchored up in one spot and i had 25 casts and 25 calicos on the first drop!  most of them were HUGE.  i was using a 4 ounce megabait, silver belly and blue back.  the southern california guys were commenting on how they never see fish this big when they fish locally.

we had quite a variety of fish coming over the rail.  it was an absolute blast!

there were still yellowtail to be had.  most of the guys had limited out already, so i got a couple of handoffs.  roger caught a nice one on his own.

lunch!  remember those massive calicos we caught the day before?  well, here they are again.  this was some of the best tasting bass i've ever had.

the weather was spectacular today, so the skipper decided to run up along the weather side of the island.  in all the years i've fish cedros, i've never seen this side before.  it was a real treat!

Quote from: ahistick;250732Below is Chef Drew Rivera...he created all the delicious food for the trip!

Not  only talented in the galley, but the he is one hell of a fisherman  too...He was sight casting with a 10 foot Harnell to breaking yellowtail  off the bow and went for 3 hook-ups in 3 casts in one period...

He  was also triumphant in a 10 minute crew-only calico bass fish-off with  this 5+ lb calico bass!  The crew fish-off was one of the highlights of  the trip with 6 of the deck crew fishing including young Duke Ekstrom.  Captain Ekstrom was judge  and weighmaster, Ben was photographer, and myself on top of the bait tank  chumming sardines...the calico fishing was so good, the passengers  elected to stop and watch the crew put a clinic on with swimbaits and  jigs...

one of the nicest things about this trip was how well everyone got along.  it was really a top notch group of guys!

for fish processing, we went with fisherman's processing this time, not 5 star as a usually prefer to do.  ben had already set this up ahead of time.  some guys opted to clean their fish themselves.  i can't imagine doing this again.  it's way too much work!

Great writeup and photos! I couldn't believe the food. Compared to this, the multiday trips that I've been on (bottom fishing the gulf out of St Petersburg) were like a hobo camp. That includes the atmosphere, food, everything.

I'll probably have to win the lottery to do it, but I would love to take one of these trips someday.

Alan.............. another spectacular report and terrific photographs.  It was great to finally fish with you and Rogerrrrrr!!! is a hoot.

We did have a great group of fisherman and women who put the hurt to the fish.

Your site has grown so quickly and it has a wealth of information available for your members, kudos to your efforts as I know what it's like to put labor into a project like this.

Anyway, I look forward to sharing the rail with you again and if I have an opportunity to travel up north, I will give you a ring.

Fishermans Processing did a great job in trimming the fish fillets for me.  I used 5 Star as well but well satisfied with the work done by Fishermans Processing.

Take care Alan and stay in touch................

p.s. say hi to Rogerrrr for me.

Alan, it was great to finally meet and share fishing with you!  It was a great trip and despite a little weather, all of us worked together well!!!

It was tough to get back to work..and was a bit tough to fit my regular work clothes after all that wonderful food...slacks seem a bit snug around the waist... ;D

Shark Hunter:  It was not crowded at all...there were only 16 passengers about a 92 foot boat along with 7 crew...however, sometimes the fish...even hooked...will try to hang together under the boat  :D

Thank you to Ben for setting up and arranging this trip; all one has to do is look on our faces and see the absolute great times we had for 7 days!!!

Thanks to all who took a week out of their busy schedules.  The fish may not cooperate (but they certainly did in our past two annual trips) but the camaraderie, friendships & food, absolutely define the charter's personality.  Bottom line, it's good, positive Karma all the way around!

This vessel is design to fish 24 anglers with 12 staterooms.  We took an ultra limited load of 16 anglers to ensure everyone had space to relax ;)

Below is Chef Drew Rivera...he created all the delicious food for the trip!

Not only talented in the galley, but the he is one hell of a fisherman too...He was sight casting with a 10 foot Harnell to breaking yellowtail off the bow and went for 3 hook ups in 3 casts in one period...

I am Jealous! Just for Curiosity, I checked out the Royal Star online. It seems like a 10 to 13 day trip cost about $2500. I'm sure that's not with the special treatment that you guys got. Meaning, it would be booked full instead of the elbow room. Thanks for Sharing.

I've been on the Star on both open party trips and on Ben's charters...I've always been treated well by the crew.  Even open party trips have a semi-private charter-feel to the trip since there are many repeat and loyal clientele.  The crew treat each and every passenger well...once you hook up to a fish, a crew member will be at your side acting as spotter, coach, etc...to make sure you catch your fish and enjoy yourself...

At full capacity of 24, I don't recall feeling crowded on those trips...

If one ever has the opportunity to go on a Royal Star trip, I highly recommend  ;D

All the San Diego Long Range boats will get you on fish but there are two compelling reasons why we charter the Royal Star.

First, the treatment of your fish is primary to the quality you experience in the finish product.  If you value your fish (in our case Bluefin tuna at ~$30/pound, you'll understand what I mean.  Once your tuna (or other fish) is gaffed, it is  immediately spiked, bled, gutted and in the case of the tuna, pithed to prevent any further damage to the meat while flopping on the deck and prevent any lactic acid build-up.  It is then immediately put into 30 degree RSW (Refrigerated Sea Water). The fish is never placed in a temporary kill box.

Second, on other Long Range boats, at the end of any trip, the fish is unloaded into carts which passengers take dockside, distribute on the sidewalk and placed according to numbers.  This lends to fish bruising which again seriously affects the quality of the end product.  Not on Royal Star.  You simply debark the ship with your gear.  The crew offloads your fish into waiting ice water slush bins (thus preserving the RSW end product) and is transported to the fish processor where you await your catch.   You NEVER have to touch your fish until you receive it.

After debarking, we had breakfast, and drove to the fish processor shortly thereafter.  I personally had 1100 lbs of fish, unloaded, trimmed, processed, vacuum sealed and in coolers for transportation in less than 2 1/2 hours.

I highly recommend the Royal Star if you are consideration a Long Range trip.  :)

Fabulous trip and report!  The food looked "deadly" and by that I mean it in the best way. The chef does amazing work in a galley. You guys must have waddled off the boat!

the Kid was something else, too. great angler.  I dug the quasi-kendo match at the end. I studied Kendo for a number of years until a fellow kendoka ( we called him Ben- the wacky Iraqi) went nuts on me during a match and popped my eardrum. Had to quit for 10 weeks to let it heal and then my work and personal life changed my schedule to eliminate the only evening kendo was offered in Raleigh.  Still practice shinkendo and iaido at home.

My wife wants me to head west and south to get some fresh tuna......hmmmm....might have to sign up on a long range trip.

hi al,
you said on this trip ,guys each side of you hooked up and you didnt.
i seem to recall the same thing happened 1 or yrs ago.
i was thinking about this,i reckon its your hands.pacifically whats on them.
soap,aftershave,etc;etc;
wash your hands in fish oil, catch scent, fish gut or some sort of spray
a minute before you start to fish
it just might do the trick
cheers
