Title: Daiwa Saltist 4500H - 6500H gear removal
Post by: gamefisher on March 28, 2014, 08:50:34 PM
I have a Saltist, that needs a good clean, but I cant get the gear out?
Nothing seems to be holding it back, but it doesn't want to move beyond a point.

Does anyone removed this gear. Who can I call?

Thank you for your help
Louis

Hi Louis,

First, you need to remove the O-ring on the right side shaft.  Then move the gear until the spool shaft is at it's lower position.  Then take a small screwdriver, to go under the main gear to push out the right side bearing.  Once the bearing is removed, you will be able to remove the main gear.

Make sure you lift straight up becuase there is a tiny anti-reverse spring right under there that breaks easily.

Bryan has it exactly right. The Main Shaft catches on the Idle Gear preventing it from lifting out. The right side bearing has to be removed first so that you can shift the Main Gear enough to lift it over the Shaft.

If you advance the reel enough so that the crosswind block is completely to the rear you may be able to get a thin probe underneath to help tap out the bearing.

Often the handle pressure causes the relatively soft mainshaft alloy to "bell" at the contact point.

This is a real PITA and can hamper extraction of the bearing, sometimes making it impossible.

You need to remove this lip to restore the original diameter of the maingear shaft.

I use a small Dremel bit and a steady hand for want of a better idea.

Hope this helps.

There is also a wire retainer on the right side of the main gear holding the bearing in place. It has to be removed also.

Is there a complete service tutorial available for the saltist 4500 or 6500?
