Title: Collecting Ultralight Spinnng Reels
Post by: Danwin22 on August 22, 2018, 12:26:22 AM
I've enjoyed pan-fishing with Ultralight reels since the early 1960's and have been considering collecting a few.

My primary UL interest will be the vintage reels made before the skirted spool types and have decided on a few that were popular back when I started.  There are many more but these were the ones I lusted after.  If there are others of this style that should be added please feel free to add them.

Alcedo Micron
Quick Microlite
Penn 716
Shakespeare 2052
Garcia Mitchell 308
Garcia Mitchell 408

My second era would be the smoothly balanced Skirted-Spool designs such as the Daiwa SS No.1 and Garca-ABU Cardnal 752 and many others up to the present offerings.

Phil,

Here's a short summary of their timeline & lifespan.

The non-A 100 reels were a rebranded Zangi Pelican. Orvis started offering them about 1954. In '56 they came out with a new oval bodied (egg shaped) line, the 300, 200, & in '62 the 350, models. In '67 they reintroduced the 100 model as the "A". They also came out with the 150A & 50A later that year. All subsequent models were either "A", "S" (saltwater resistant) or "SS" (high speed 4.8:1 w/ SS or chrome or cadmium plated internal parts) until the models 400, 425, 450 & 475 (made by Coptes) were introduced in '75. The last Italian made model was the 175 in '75 & 175A in '80. After that, manufacture of various skirted spool models was moved to Asia.

Is the Orvis 100 size reel considered to be an ultralight reel or light?

Light. 50A is UL, 75A is an UL with a larger rotor cup & spool.
